The Nier series will be celebrating its 10th anniversary next year and Square Enix has opened a website specifically for the occasion. The existence of this site has led fans to suspect that an announcement about a future title is coming soon.
The first Nier title was released in Japan and Australia on April 22, 2010. Square Enix is starting the festivities early with a new website you can visit. Chronicling the different landmarks of the games, the existence of this very site could mean that more Nier is coming. Why else would Square Enix be celebrating the once niche game if not for some surprise announcement?
The original Nier was released in two forms in Japan. Nier Gestalt hit the Xbox 360 and starred an older, grizzled man protecting this daughter from evil. Nier Replicant, on the other hand, released for the PlayStation 3 starred a younger and more androgynous main character. Many years later, Nier: Automata was released for PC and PlayStation 4 in 2017. It was met with mass critical acclaim for its multi-faceted story and fast-paced action scenes.
Nier: Automata seemed like a niche title on the surface, but it went on to have amazing commercial and critical success. The game has since crossed over with titles like Monster Hunter Frontier Z and Phantasy Star Online 2. Protagonist 2B has even become a playable character in Bandai Namco’s Soulcalibur VI. The biggest Nier: Automata crossover happened as part of the YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse event in Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, so it’s clear that Square Enix wants to keep the series fresh in the minds of fans.
The developers of Nier: Automata have hinted that a new Nier game in development, but no official announcements have been forthcoming. The impending tenth anniversary of the Nier series seems like it would be the perfect event to announce a new entry. It’s also possible that a remastered version of the original Nier that uses both protagonists could be on the cards.
