Square Enix has come to the reasonable conclusion that there are plenty of people out there in possession of both a phone and an endless amount of time to kill, so they’ve been hard at work developing a new mobile MMORPG called Fantasy Earth Genesis.

The game was first teased back in 2017, and was released in Japan in September 2018. Now, over a year later, players in the United States have learned that they’ll be able to play an American version of the game soon enough.

Most people in the United States have probably never heard of Fantasy Earth, but the upcoming game is a sequel to an earlier MMORPG that was developed by Square Enix called Fantasy Earth Zero, which was released all the way back in 2006, and then abandoned by Square Enix about six years later when they sold the publishing rights to Gamepot. Gamepot closed its doors in 2017, so Square Enix has decided to give the franchise another go.

One of the big draws of Fantasy Earth Zero was massive player-versus-player battles, which is a feature that Square Enix has ported over to the new game. Fantasy Earth Genesis will let players take part in 50 vs. 50 battles.

These battles come after players choose between one of three kingdoms and work to expand it borders, conquering new lands by capturing crystal towers and defending them from people who want to take them from you.

Anyone who’s interested in the game can pre-register for it now. The pre-registration will come with a few rewards, including orbs for the game’s gacha mechanics, along with potions and tomes.

No official release date for the U.S. version of Fantasy Earth Genesis has been announced, but anyone who does pre-register will receive updates about the game’s localized release.

Whether or not there’s a U.S. audience for Square Enix’s prequel to an old MMORPG remains to be seen, but Square Enix has shown it has some MMORPG prowess through the continued success of Final Fantasy XIV, so it’s possible that fans of the company’s games will come out in support of the new release.
