Netflix sensation Squid Game has offered the perfect meme opportunity for Pokémon GO challenges, with one fan comparing a particularly tricky Pokémon GO task to one of the series’ many death games. The Korean drama has seen a number of gaming-related memes pop up since its September release, with one fan even recreating Squid Game in Animal Crossing.

Squid Game has been a huge success for Netflix, quickly becoming one of the most popular shows of the year and wowing viewers across the world. The new release follows a group of challengers tasked with fighting for their lives across a series of children’s games, with participants hoping to get their hands on a big cash prize. The twisted takes on playground classics have already reached meme status, with many seeing viral success after comparing Squid Game’s challenges to everyday experiences. As one of the biggest mobile games on the market, it was just a matter of time until Pokémon GO’s in-game challenges were tied to the popular series.

Redditor doctordreii has compared one of Pokémon GO’s Field Research challenges to Squid Game’s second task, describing the Field Research as their “Everest.” The second challenge of Squid Game requires players to cut a set shape out of dalgona candy, a Korean honeycomb treat, without breaking it. The tricky task costs lots of Squid Game contestants their lives, and while Pokémon GO’s “Make 5 Great Curveball Throws in a row” October Field Research isn’t quite as deadly, it’s about as challenging. The Reddit comparison meme has been a hit with Pokémon GO players who’ve also been struggling with the task, with the post seeing over 2,000 upvotes at the time of writing.

Making five Pokémon GO Great Curveball throws in a row is one of the hardest Field Research tasks players are faced with this October, and completing it will reward players with Generation Three’s Spinda. Completing seven of the challenges in total will earn players the ghost-type Pokémon Yamask as the October Breakthrough Research reward. While a perfect curveball is hard to master, many Pokémon GO players have found them to be the best way to catch Pokémon, making pocket monsters hard to miss when performed as intended. Mastering the skill may take time, but can be well worth the trouble.

Despite this particularly tricky challenge, Pokémon GO has lots for players to look forward to this October. Legendary and Mythical Pokémon including Genesect, Darkrai, and Giratina will be appearing in five-star raids throughout the month, ending on November 1. Fans can also expect tie-in content to celebrate the October 8 release of Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle on Netflix, as well as a new Pokémon GO community day.
