The Old Man twist in Squid Game took fans by surprise, and it may have secretly set up Gi-hun’s dark turn in season 2 of the Netflix series. In one last Squid Game twist, the series revealed that the Old Man/Oh Il-nam (Oh Yeong-su) survived the games. During the season 1 finale, Il-nam reveals to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) that he was one of the architects of the games and was secretly behind everything. The pair even play one final game, with Il-nam betting Gi-hun that no one would help a man who was freezing on the street. The game seems to be an attempt to shake Gi-hun’s faith in humanity, but Gi-hun wins when strangers eventually save the man.
The twist with Il-nam changed everything about Squid Game. Gi-hun befriended Il-nam during the deadly games, looking out for the Old Man throughout the competition. However, the Old Man was never genuinely in any danger. He just played for fun. So despite Il-nam losing the marble game on purpose to Gi-hun, the Old Man received a free pass and got to live. Because of the twist, other games, such as the Tug of War, were likely rigged as well.
Now, it seems Squid Game set up Gi-hun to go down a dark path. The series director, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, recently teased the direction for season 2, saying Gi-hun will have to go through a test. After all, a previous winner, Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), ended up joining the game makers. “It’s like Darth Vader. Some end up Jedi and some become Darth Vader, right?” the director said. Though Gi-hun seems hellbent on bringing down the games in the season 1 finale, there are already hints that he’s taking the darker path. But, again, Gi-hun’s potentially dark turn all goes back to the Old Man twist.
Because of the Old Man twist, Gi-hun’s worst decision had no consequences. During the marble game in Squid Game, players need to get their opponent’s marbles to win. At the beginning of the game, Il-nam acts confused and forgetful, and Gi-hun takes advantage of it. He tricks his supposed friend for his share of the marbles, knowing that it means Il-nam will die. Of course, Il-nam was toying with Gi-hun the whole time. Until Squid Game revealed that the Old Man lived, the decision to cheat his friend was a dark turn for Gi-hun, going against everything he believed. However, since Il-nam lived in a surprising Squid Game twist, Gi-hun learns his worst decision had no consequences. Instead, it makes him more primed to make dark decisions in the future.
Despite his propensity for darkness, there’s still a chance for Gi-hun to take the Jedi path. After all, Gi-hun is dead set against the games at the end of Squid Game season 1. He saves one potential victim by taking away the business card the desperate person needs to enter the games, and he avoids getting on a plane to see his family to try to put an end to the competition. Most of his actions indicate he would never turn to the dark side. But, of course, that may be true only from a certain point of view.
