Since the box office underperformance of 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, the future of the Star Trek franchise’s “Kelvin Timeline” has been uncertain. While none of the Chris Pine-starring Trek movies have bombed at the box office, none of them have been record-breaking blockbusters to write home about, either.

Understandably, Paramount executives are a little on the fence about continuing the series. However, Pine is a perfect Captain Kirk, the Kelvin Timeline has a lot of untapped potential, and it’s not too late to turn the franchise around.

10 J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Reboot Successfully Saved The Franchise

The Star Trek franchise was on the rocks before J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot came along. While Star Wars fans are divided on Abrams’ contributions to a galaxy far, far away, his Trek reboot was an unequivocal success that won over both hardcore Trekkies and casual viewers who wouldn’t know a Klingon from a Romulan.

Though its first sequel took an uncharacteristically dark turn and its second sequel overcompensated with Marvel-style one-liners and the Beastie Boys, it’s not too late to recapture what made 2009’s Star Trek the perfect intersection between fan service and crowd-pleasing spectacle.

9 Chris Pine And Zachary Quinto Perfectly Recaptured Kirk And Spock’s Dynamic

The heart and soul of Star Trek – at least The Original Series, upon which the Kelvin Timeline is based – is Kirk and Spock’s dynamic as a passionate leader and his logical half-Vulcan sidekick.

While there’s no replacing the legendary William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy as the definitive Kirk and Spock, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have perfectly recaptured the characters’ earnest dynamic in the new movies. It would be a shame not to see them share the screen again.

8 Quentin Tarantino’s R-Rated Take Could Shake Up The Franchise

Way back in 2017, it was reported that Quentin Tarantino had pitched a Star Trek movie to Paramount. Tarantino’s take was said to be a hard-R story described as “Pulp Fiction in space,” with The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith working on the script.

It might sound like an R-rated Tarantino Star Trek movie would be tricky to pull off, but that’s just the kind of bold creative move that this franchise needs to shake it up.

7 It’s A Unique Kind Of Reboot

Reboots are ten a penny in today’s Hollywood, but 2009’s Star Trek – and the Kelvin Timeline at large – is a unique kind of reboot. It reboots the source material in that it casts new actors in all the iconic roles and brings a modern aesthetic to a dated sci-fi universe.

However, it’s also a continuation, as it takes place in an alternate timeline of the original universe. Leonard Nimoy’s return as an elderly Spock was just the tip of the iceberg; this parallel universe could be used to tell all kinds of thought-provoking stories.

6 The Supporting Cast’s Star Power Has Risen

Paramount’s main concern about the Star Trek franchise is that the last movie, Beyond, underperformed at the box office. But in the years since the Kelvin threequel hit theaters, the star power of some of the series’ supporting actors has risen drastically.

Ever since Gamora was crucial to both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Zoe Saldana has been one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood, while the role of Billy Butcher in Amazon’s The Boys has finally earned Karl Urban the recognition he deserves.

5 There Are A Bunch Of Great Concepts That Future Sequels Could Use

The first three Kelvin Timeline movies have used a lot of fan-favorite concepts from the franchise’s mythology, like the Romulans’ rivalry with the Federation and the introduction of Khan Noonien Singh, but there are still a bunch of great unused concepts that future sequels could explore.

The next Kelvin movie could bring in tribbles or the Mirror Universe, or adapt “The City on the Edge of Forever” as a feature-length film.

4 Beyond Proved A Return To Episodic Storytelling Could Work

After Star Trek Into Darkness made the mistake of going full Bayhem by crashing the Enterprise into Earth for the final battle, Star Trek Beyond moved away from the mega-scale sensibility of Abrams’ initial movies and returned to the Trek franchise’s episodic roots.

In the age of interconnected cinematic universes, a series that offers standalone adventures through the cosmos could make for a refreshing change.

3 The Series Has Untapped Potential

In the 1960s, Gene Roddenberry initially created Star Trek as an escapist sci-fi vehicle to convey social commentary about contemporary societal fears like racism and communism.

The Kelvin Timeline movies have yet to sink their teeth into this aspect of the lore – Star Trek Into Darkness used terrorism as a plot point, but didn’t really dig into any of the political implications of it – and there’s plenty of room for critique in today’s sociopolitical climate.

2 The Rumored Premise Of Star Trek 4 Sounds Great

When Paramount initially started developing Star Trek 4 before the box office disappointment of Star Trek Beyond gave the studio cold feet, the rumored premise for the fourth movie revolved around time travel and brought back Chris Hemsworth as Kirk’s late father.

So much about this rumored premise sounds great: leaning into the hard sci-fi elements of Trek would help to distance the Kelvin Timeline from its pseudo-Star Wars tone, Hemsworth is one of the most revered blockbuster stars working today, and resolving Kirk’s insecurities about his father would provide all kinds of emotional closure for long-time viewers.

1 The Kelvin Timeline Could Eventually Be Used To Reboot The Next Generation

The Kelvin Timeline with Chris Pine’s Kirk and Zachary Quinto’s Spock hasn’t quite run out of steam yet, but it inevitably will, just like the original run of TOS-based Trek movies. However, when that does happen, the alternate Trek-verse created by Abrams could be used to reboot The Next Generation on the big screen.

Paramount could bring in a TNG-obsessed filmmaker to cast a new Picard, Riker, and Geordi La Forge and bring the “next generation” of Star Trek legends into the modern blockbuster landscape.
