The trailer for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 3 teases an appearance from the Qowat Milat, an elite group of female Romulan warriors, and Burnham hunting for a killer. Star Trek: Discovery is the sixth canon series in the Star Trek universe created by Gene Roddenberry. The series is currently airing its fourth season on Paramount+, having aired previously on the now-defunct CBS All Access.
Star Trek Discovery follows the crew of the Discovery, with lead character Michael Burnham portrayed by Sonequa Martin-Green. Unlike its more episodic predecessors, the series has a more serialized approach to storytelling, sending the Discovery 900 years into the future at the end of Season 2 to explore a fragmented Federation and what the galaxy would look like under those conditions. The show also shares continuity with Star Trek: Picard, which will start its second season in February 2022.
The trailer shared via startrekonpplus, the show’s official Instagram account, shows a member of the Qowat Milat coming into conflict with the Discovery crew. The caption that came with the trailer directly says that the crew will come into contact with a Qowat Milat blade (also known as a tan qalanq), teasing a possibly violent altercation. Meanwhile, the episode’s official description hints at an “anomaly” that may be killing people, as Stamets and the science team work to stop it.

The Romulan warriors first appeared on Star Trek: Picard and played a vital role in the narrative, but it was confirmed via their first appearance on Star Trek: Discovery that they’re still around 900 years in the future. Both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard takes place in the Primary timeline, separate from the Kelvin timeline featured in J.J. Abrams’ trilogy of films starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. As a result, they share continuity with past Star Trek series, with Star Trek: Picard being a direct continuation of Star Trek: The Next Generation featuring many characters from that series. Star Trek: Discovery’s first two seasons took place about ten years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, before the jump forward in time.
Star Trek has remained a cultural touchstone and a giant in science fiction storytelling despite some messy canon. The franchise never shied away from using its setting to comment on contemporary issues, creating a sort of optimism for humanity in the future. Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 has already made interesting developments in the universe’s lore. With a continuous willingness to push the canon into new and exciting territory, the series can live up to its tagline to boldly go where no one has gone before.
