Star Trek: Picard season 2 could reveal that Dahj (Isa Briones) not only escaped death in season 1 but she may even become the series’ next villain. In Star Trek: Picard, Patrick Stewart resumed his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard. With a new crew at his side, including Soji, Dahj’s identical twin, the former Captain of the Starship Enterprise saved the galaxy from a Romulan threat and from the coming of an ancient synthetic enemy from beyond the Alpha Quadrant. By the end of Star Trek: Picard season 1, Jean-Luc not only said a final goodbye to Commander Data (Brent Spiner) but he also died and was resurrected in a new synthetic body.

However, Dahj didn’t get to join in any of Picard’s new adventures in outer space. Instead, she was the tragic sacrificial lamb that kicked off the action and mystery of Star Trek: Picard season 1. Dahj and Soji are highly advanced synthetics built from a single positronic neuron retrieved from Data, essentially making them the android Starfleet Officer’s daughters. Both Dahj and Soji were sent to Earth and the Romulan-controlled Borg Cube called the Artifact, respectively, by their creator Dr. Bruce Maddox (John Ales) as a two-pronged approach to uncover the conspiracy behind the United Federation of Planets’ ban on artificial lifeforms. Dahj only appeared in the premiere episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Remembrance”, where she was targeted and killed by the Romulan Tal Shiar sect called the Zhat Vash.

In fact, Jean-Luc only knew Dahj for a few hours, but it was her death that prompted the retired Admiral to return to space to save her sister Soji from an identical fate. Later, Picard, Soji, and the motley crew of the starship La Sirena located the synthetics’ homeworld, Coppelius AKA Ghulion IV, where the rest of the synthetics built by Maddox and Dr. Altan Inigo Soong (Brent Spiner) lived, and this includes the devious Sutra, an earlier, golden-skinned predecessor of Dahj and Soji. Sutra’s own twin, Jana, died years prior, but Picard saved Soji from being Sutra’s pawn who brought about the end of organic life in the galaxy. The Starfleet legend instead inspired Soji to choose her own destiny.

Dahj’s death was predicted (and followed through) by the Romulans thanks to their prophecy about the coming of “the Destroyer”. Star Trek: Picard season 1 was matter-of-fact that Dahj is dead and didn’t raise the possibility that she could, in fact, be alive. And yet, Dahj was literally the spark that kicked off all of the action and drama of Star Trek: Picard season 1 and the loss of such a compelling character seems like a waste. So, what if Dahj actually isn’t dead? What if, instead, she somehow survived to return as a villain in Star Trek: Picard season 2?

How Dahj Could Have Survived Star Trek: Picard Season 1

Although Dahj and Soji resemble human females in their early 20s, the android twins were only built three years before the events of Star Trek: Picard season 1. Dahj’s short life ended in violence; the synthetic woman was programmed to believe that she was Dahj Asha, who grew up in Seattle, lived in Greater Boston, and was accepted as a research fellow at the Daystrom Institute in Okinawa. Zhat Vash shock troops sent by Narissa (Peyton List) attacked Dahj in her apartment, killing her boyfriend. But Dahj’s programming activated and after she killed the Romulans, she followed her directive to find Jean-Luc Picard. However, Dahj was confused about her true nature as a synthetic and she didn’t trust Picard or herself.

After Picard convinced Dahj of his theory that she was a synthetic related to the late Commander Data, they were both attacked by Zhat Vash shock troops on the grounds of Starfleet Headquarters. Dahj fought off the soldiers but she was caught by the detonation of their disruptor rifle. The explosion disintegrated Dahj while Picard was blown back by the shockwave, but the Admiral survived. Later, Starfleet’s Head of Security Commodore Oh (Tamlyn Tomita), who was secretly the leader of the Zhat Vash, surveyed the forensics and determined that no DNA of Dahj remained at the scene.

Dahj’s death by disintegration appears to be cut-and-dry; audiences saw Dahj physically eroding before she was engulfed by the explosion. But if Dahj was able to survive, the only way would have been if she was beamed away before the explosion would have eradicated her and also, her damaged body would need to be repaired after the fact. And, if that was indeed what happened, there are only two members of Jean-Luc Picard’s known rogue’s gallery who could have accomplished such a miraculous feat: Q (John de Lancie) and the Borg Queen (Alice Kriege).

Q Could Have Saved Dahj

Q recently appeared in Star Trek: Lower Decks and it turns out the omnipotent being has been pestering other Starfleet crews besides Picard, including the officers of the U.S.S. Cerritos. Of course, Q has been a thorn in Jean-Luc Picard’s side since his first appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s premiere episode, “Encounter at Farpoint”. Q has also appeared on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, where he was punched by then-Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), and he also grew fascinated by Star Trek: Voyager’s Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew).

The modus operandi of Q usually involves his curiosity about humans and occasionally putting them on trial for the crimes of their species. Q’s cameo in Star Trek: Lower Decks contained a subtle hint that the impossibly powerful irritant knew that Picard was retired and “making wine” in 2399, even though the Star Trek animated comedy is set almost 20 years before Star Trek Picard. Leaping through various points in the Star Trek timeline is child’s play for the omnipotent Q, but if he has visited Star Trek: Picard’s era, it’s not inconceivable Q could have become interested in Dahj.

While Data didn’t impress Q, Dahj is a different story since she is completely indistinguishable from a human and she is one of the most advanced synthetic beings created by Man. Q could have seen potential in Dahj and it would take a mere snap of his fingers to instantaneously save her from disintegration. A team-up between Dahj and Q could be rife with comedic possibilities, and the fact that Jean-Luc Picard is now also synthetic would hold an extra fascination for Q. This is one potential direction for Star Trek: Picard season 2 and Q is an instant fix for the problem of ‘resurrecting’ Dahj. Dahj joining forces with Q, whether voluntary or not, would prove to exasperate both Jean-Luc and Dahj’s sister Soji.

The Borg Queen Could Have Saved Dahj (And Become Her)

A more compelling possibility would be the Borg Queen saving Dahj at the last second by simply using transwarp beaming to transport her to a Borg Cube – and this wouldn’t be something Data’s daughter would be grateful for. However, being rescued by the Borg Queen is a fast track for Dahj to become Star Trek: Picard season 2’s main villain. After all, Star Trek: Picard season 1 leaned into the fact that Jean-Luc was once assimilated and turned into Locutus of Borg, a trauma he can never fully recover from. Further, Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) is part of Star Trek: Picard, which was the Trekkers’ dream team-up of the two most beloved ex-Borg heroes in Star Trek.

The Borg Queen debuted as the nemesis of Captain Picard in 1996’s Star Trek: First Contact, but her target wasn’t Jean-Luc at first. Besides her attempt to assimilate Earth in the 21st century, the Borg Queen singled out Data, not Picard, and she attempted to seduce the android into becoming her mate and counterpart. The Borg Queen and Picard haven’t crossed paths since and the villainess moved on to becoming Captain Janeway’s rival on Star Trek: Voyager. But the Borg Queen has certainly never forgotten Picard or Data. Data’s synthetic daughter Dahj would be a tempting prize for the Borg Queen.

Star Trek: Picard established that the Romulans have the technology to ‘reclaim’ Borg and revert them back to their true selves, essentially reversing assimilation. Hugh (Jonathan Del Arco) even asked Picard to advocate for the xBs’ rights before his death. This is a huge threat to the Borg Queen and her quest for perfection; it even threatens to make the Borg in their current form obsolete. But Dahj offers the possibility for a new future and a new form for the Borg. Rather than a mate, like Data would have been, it’s possible that the Borg Queen could assume Dahj’s form and become the harbinger of a new evolution of the Borg.

Dahj becoming the avatar of the Borg Queen would allow the cyborg villainess to become part of Star Trek: Picard in a novel way, and it would also allow Isa Briones to play yet another iteration of the many identical androids she has portrayed in the series. Dahj bonding with the Borg Queen would be a challenge that would truly test Picard, Soji, Seven of Nine, and the entire crew of La Sirena and the evolved Borg would be a worthy threat to the entire Alpha Quadrant. It would also create a compelling drama of whether Picard and Soji can save her twin sister while also being a twist on Data’s rivalry with his evil twin, Lore. Star Trek: Picard season 1 ended with a wide-open canvas full of possibilities but bringing back Dahj and making her season 2’s new villain would be fascinating.
