Poe Dameron is one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. What’s not to love? He’s sassy, he’s brave, he’s a little reckless, and he’s one of the best pilots in the galaxy. Oscar Isaac endeared fans everywhere to the cocky pilot in The Force Awakens, and his story is far from over, even though the Skywalker Saga has ended.

Poe Dameron is more than just a hotheaded flyboy with a heart of gold. He has a rich history that continues to be thoroughly explored in comics and novelizations. Here is a list of 10 things you didn’t know about Poe Dameron if you’ve only watched the sequel trilogy.

10 He Was Born On Yavin 4

Poe Dameron was born in 2ABY on Yavin 4, a jungle-covered moon of the gas giant planet Yavin, and it once served as the headquarters for the Rebel Alliance. This densely forested world is first glimpsed in A New Hope, and continues to be referenced in movies, comics, and novelizations. The real-life shooting location of Yavin 4 is Guatemala, which coincidentally, is also where Oscar Isaac was born.

9 His Parents Were Both Rebels

Fighting against oppressive governments is in Poe’s blood. Kes Dameron and Shara Bey were both members of the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War, footsteps in which their son would eventually follow. Kes was a Sergeant in a task force led by Han Solo called the Pathfinders, and Shara Bey was a skilled pilot. Unhappy with having to be away from Poe during his childhood, Kes and Shara retired and settled on Yavin 4 to raise him.

8 His Mother Taught Him To Fly When He Was 6 Years Old

Shara Bey was a decorated war veteran and a talented pilot. When she retired from the Rebellion, she was given an RZ-1 A-Wing interceptor as compensation for her service. She used this very ship to start teaching Poe how to fly when he was only 6 years old.

He wasn’t tall enough to sit in it by himself, but she held him in her lap and let him learn how to work the controls. This was the beginning of his long and successful piloting career.

7 His Parents Were Friends With The Solos

Poe’s mother passed away when he was only 8 years old, and the relationship between Poe and General Organa is very comparable to that of a mother and son. She is authoritative but loving, supportive but unafraid to rebuke him when he needs it. This is likely because Leia and Han were friends with Kes and Shara during the war. It is probable that they had at least some contact with the Damerons until Leia recruited Poe to the Resistance years later.

6 He Had A “Force Tree” In His Backyard

The Jedi Temple on Coruscant was home to an ancient, force-sensitive tree, also known as “The Great Tree.” Luke Skywalker once took a cutting from it and gifted it to Kes Dameron. It was planted in their backyard on Yavin 4. Poe spent his childhood playing in its branches, until one day his antics resulted in accidentally burning part of the tree. Kes was unamused and Poe spent the next year caring for it until it was perfect again.

5 He Was In The Republic Navy Before He Was In The Resistance

The films don’t go deeply into Poe’s history, with only hints at his past prior to his life in the Resistance. The comic delves much deeper. After a short stint as a spice runner mentioned in The Rise of Skywalker, Poe joined the New Republic Navy and was officially trained as a pilot by Wedge Antilles.

He was one of his best students, and was eventually given command of the Rapier Squadron. This is also when he met his best droid buddy, BB-8.

4 His Joke Recruitment Poster Went Space Viral

In Star Wars Propaganda: A History of Persuasive Art in the Galaxy, fans learned that Poe was basically a meme! It was a running joke among Resistance pilots that if Poe posed for a Resistance recruitment poster, their numbers would skyrocket. Prankster Yolo Ziff decided to test that theory, and designed one as a joke. It spread around the galaxy, and became so popular that it actually resulted in a boost in numbers of recruits.

3 He Wears His Mother’s Wedding Ring On A Necklace

Look closely and you may notice that Poe wears a chain around his neck throughout the sequel trilogy. It’s not hard to imagine Poe as sentimental or a romantic, and The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary confirms it.

The chain holds Shara Bey’s wedding ring. He keeps his late mother’s ring close to his heart and hopes to one day share it with a partner when he’s ready to get married.

2 He Has A Deep Respect For C-3PO (And All Droids)

Poe clearly has a soft spot for his astromech BB-8, but Poe’s relationship with C-3PO in the movies is strained at best. In the comics, Poe has a deep respect for the droid effort in the Resistance. He even risks his life to save C-3PO, and corrects the friendly protocol droid when he calls him “master.” “You were directly involved in bringing down the Empire, you and Artoo, so I don’t know why you’re calling me master … seems like people should call you that.”

1 Oscar Isaac Says Poe’s Sexuality Is Fluid

It’s no secret that Oscar Isaac has been one of the biggest supporters of Poe Dameron being a part of the LGBT community. He has petitioned for a relationship between Poe and Finn since The Force Awakens, and despite it not becoming canon, he still claims he believes Poe is at least bisexual. “I’m all about keeping it as fluid as possible. There are a lot of interesting people in the galaxy, it’d be a shame to cut off 50 percent. I think Poe’s open to any kind of adventure.”
