Most Jedi only get one master: pre-Sith Anakin was trained by Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan was trained by Qui-Gon, Qui-Gon was trained by pre-Sith Count Dooku, etc. However, since Luke Skywalker was trained under extreme circumstances – in the aftermath of the brutal massacre of the Jedi and the rise of a fascist regime – he was a padawan to two separate masters.

Obi-Wan handled Luke’s initial training in the original 1977 Star Wars movie, then Yoda took over after Obi-Wan died (in the physical sense). The teaching methods of both of Luke’s Jedi masters had some merit, but which was the best?

10 Yoda: He Literally Rode On Luke’s Back To Keep Him Focused

While Obi-Wan sat back with his feet up during Luke’s initial training on the Millennium Falcon, Yoda spent the entirety of Luke’s training riding on his back to make sure he stayed focussed.

To be fair to Obi-Wan, he wasn’t the right size to ride on Luke’s back. Yoda is much smaller and nimbler, and therefore able to hitch an hours-long piggyback ride. But still, Yoda’s willingness to do that shows his commitment as a teacher.

9 Obi-Wan: He Taught Luke How To Use A Lightsaber

After a droid arrives on Tatooine calling Obi-Wan into action, the Jedi master decides it’s finally time for Luke to become a Jedi himself and gives Luke his father’s old lightsaber, which Revenge of the Sith later revealed he stole after leaving Anakin for dead on Mustafar.

While Jedi Knights draw all their power from the Force, their lightsaber is the weapon that they use to channel that power. As The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale showed, Luke would eventually go on to become one of the greatest lightsaber-wielders in Star Wars history.

8 Yoda: He Torched The Sacred Jedi Texts Just To Teach Luke A Lesson

Decades after Luke completed his training, he still had important lessons to learn. Yoda’s Force ghost imparts plenty of handy wisdom onto his old padawan throughout The Last Jedi, but actions speak louder than words.

In one powerful scene, Yoda summons lightning to burn the sacred Jedi texts to a crisp, just to teach Luke to see the wood for the trees. It’s a bold move, but it’s just what the downtrodden Luke needed.

7 Obi-Wan: He Introduced Luke To The Mysticism Of The Force

Luke had never heard of the Force before Obi-Wan told him, “The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.”

The first step toward mastering the Force is understanding what it is, and Obi-Wan’s introductory lecture taught Luke all about its intangible mysticism.

6 Yoda: He Told Luke The Truth About His Father

When Luke came to Yoda with questions about his father, he answered them all transparently. With Obi-Wan a few years earlier, it was a different story, and it led Luke to quite a surprise on Cloud City.

The key to a strong master-padawan relationship is mutual trust. Anakin didn’t trust Obi-Wan and it led him to the dark side. Then, Obi-Wan made the same mistake by lying to Luke about just that. Obi-Wan insists that what he told Luke was true “from a certain point of view,” but what Yoda told Luke was true from a much clearer point of view.

5 Obi-Wan: Keeping Luke On The Light Side Redeemed His Failures As Anakin’s Master

Obi-Wan always blamed himself for allowing Anakin to fall to the dark side. When Luke learned that Darth Vader was his father, he began to fear that he was susceptible to the same tragic fate.

Yoda’s contributions to keeping Luke on the light side can’t be discounted – not to mention the tireless efforts of Luke himself – but Obi-Wan’s contributions to Luke’s much more collected nature effectively redeemed his failures as Anakin’s master.

4 Yoda: He Taught Luke To Recognize The Allure Of The Dark Side

The best way to resist the temptation of the dark side is to recognize its allure. When a dark vision draws Luke into a cave, Yoda encourages him to follow it. Seeing his own face under Vader’s mask taught Luke to recognize the possibility of falling to the dark side (and it also foreshadowed the original trilogy’s most shocking twists).

It’s worth noting however that, years later, Luke tried the same method when he was training Rey in The Last Jedi, but it kind of backfired because she didn’t hesitate to go straight to the dark side.

3 Obi-Wan: He Took Him On A Crash Course Through A “Wretched Hive Of Scum And Villainy”

Obi-Wan gave Luke a crash course in being a defender of peace in the galaxy by taking him deep into the “wretched hive of scum and villainy” that is Mos Eisley Spaceport. There, he’s harassed by a couple of thugs and Obi-Wan ends up slicing off one of their arms so they’ll leave Luke alone.

This crash course in facing danger head-on may have been necessitated by the immediate threat presented by the Empire, but it worked wonders for Luke’s accelerated Jedi training nonetheless.

2 Yoda: Lifting Luke’s X-Wing From The Swamp Was A Great Teachable Moment

In education, a teachable moment is when an unplanned event in the classroom is used by a teacher as a springboard to impart some valuable wisdom onto their students. Since these moments can’t be planned for, they rely on the teacher’s instincts.

When Luke wants to cut his training short to save Han and Leia, he tries and fails to lift his X-wing out of the swamp before deeming it to be impossible. Yoda uses this admission of defeat as a teachable moment. He puts his “There is no try” philosophy into practice and shows Luke that with enough focus, patience, and determination, it is possible to lift an X-wing with the Force.

1 Obi-Wan: He Watched Over Luke Throughout His Entire Childhood

Obi-Wan didn’t train Luke as a youngling, but he did watch over him throughout his entire childhood on Tatooine. Uncle Owen wasn’t a fan of Obi-Wan’s – perhaps because he blamed him for Anakin’s downfall – but he was there for Luke nevertheless.

Teaching somebody to use the Force responsibly is no easy feat because everybody’s Force sensitivity is different. The more a master knows about their padawan, the better. And since Obi-Wan watched Luke grow up, he knows him pretty well.
