Star Wars Armada has just exited hyperspace with a new wave of Clone Wars releases to satisfy our prequel trilogy space battle dreams.

Star Wars Armada is the second of Fantasy Flight Games tabletop space battle Star Wars titles. Unlike X-Wing, Armada has not seen an as regular release schedule which has left players of the capital class ship combat game feeling hate and fear. This new release will hopefully restore some of the lost confidence felt by fans of the franchise and hopefully be more attainable than the previous, yet admittedly gorgeous, Super Star Destroyer.

The new releases can be split between the two factions of the Clone Wars, The Galactic Republic and Separatist Alliance. Each will receive a Fleet Starter’ pack as wells as squadron Expansion Packs. There are also additional Dial Packs and an Upgrade Card Collection for the base game. Each Fleet Starter contains three ships supported by four squadrons, as well as dice, cards, and accessories needed to use them in your games. The Expansion Packs contain eight squadrons of mixed fighters with everything needed to play them included in the box.

The Galactic Republic Fleet Starter Set contains an Acclamator Class Assault Ship and two Counselor Class Cruisers supported by four squadrons of V-19 Torrents. The Squadron Expansion Pack contains seven elite pilots and two squadrons each of Aethersprites, Y-Wings, ARC-170 Starfighters, and V-19 Torrents.

The Separatist Alliance Fleet Starter Set contains a Munificent Class Star Frigate, two Hardcell Class Interstellar Transports, and four squadrons of Vulture Droids. The Squadron Expansion Pack contains six elite pilots and two squadrons each of Vulture Droids, Hyena Bombers, Droid Tri-fighters, and Belbullab-22 Starfighters.

This new direction is an interesting take for FFG as each Fleet starter pack will contain everything a new player needs to learn how to play the game. Previously the core game was needed for play, with expansion sets providing the required equipment only for the contents. We suspect this is an experiment to reinvent the game that will provide better value for players who can now concentrate on a single faction from the get-go and receive better value for their initial investment. We expect this to roll out for the later time periods of the classic trilogy and new trilogy in due course.
