Disney+’s upcoming live-action Star Wars series Ahsoka is reportedly looking to cast an actress to portray Sabine Wren in live-action. Sabine first debuted in 2014’s animated series Star Wars: Rebels, which was one of the first significant Star Wars projects Disney released following their acquisition of Lucasfilm. While details on the series are still under wraps, Ahsoka’s (Rosario Dawson) brief cameo in Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian teased that the show will follow the titular character as she searches for Grand Admiral Thrawn.

In-universe, Sabine (Tiya Sircar) is a Mandalorian warrior descended from Clan Wren of House Viszla. She adventures with the Ghost crew alongside the Jedi Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and his apprentice Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray). Sabine differentiates herself from other Mandalorians depicted in Star Wars canon by displaying an artistic flare, frequently custom-painting her own Beskar armor and defacing Imperial military installations with graffiti. The last time audiences saw her was in the series finale of Rebels, where she joins Ahsoka in search of Ezra who disappeared at the episode’s climax alongside Thrawn.

THR reports that Lucasfilm wants to cast an actor to play a live-action Sabine Wren in Ahsoka. Reportedly, the actor will star opposite Dawson in what is presumably a significant role. While Disney has released few details about the series so far, it makes sense that the series would build upon the friendship established in Rebels.

Since the Rebels series finale, fans have speculated over when Sabine would next appear. Many believed that the search for Ezra and Thrawn would be depicted in an animated sequel series to Rebels. However, ever since Ahsoka’s cameo in The Mandalorian, a live-action appearance has come to dominate the speculative discourse. If these reports are accurate, Sabine would be the fifth character from Disney’s recent slate of Star Wars projects to make the jump from animation to live-action, joining the likes of Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) and Chopper (Dave Filoni) in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) and Ahsoka in The Mandalorian.

As the Star Wars brand continues to expand, the franchise’s recent projects have demonstrated the remarkable ability to incorporate lore from all aspects of Star Wars canon, from animation to publishing. While there have been occasional inconsistencies here and there, such minor contradictions are overshadowed by the wonder of seeing a character jump from a more obscure medium into live-action (such as in the case of Cobb Vanth, who debuted in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath novels but then appeared in The Mandalorian portrayed by Timothy Olyphant). Given Star Wars’ consistent track record when it comes to casting, Ahsoka is sure to debut a live-action iteration of Sabine Wren that fans will adore.
