A creature designer from The Empire Strikes Back shares a look at a dragon that was originally supposed to appear in the Dagobah sequence. The Empire Strikes Back is the iconic 1980 sequel to the massive smash hit Star Wars, which hit theaters in 1977 and instantly became a phenomenon. The franchise is still going strong after over 40 years, with the newest trilogy concluding with episode IX, The Rise of Skywalker, in 2019. While there are many more Star Wars films in development, the series is currently residing most prominently on Disney+, with the streaming series The Book of Boba Fett poised to premiere this December following two seasons of The Mandalorian. There is also an Ahsoka spinoff also in the works starring Rosario Dawson.

In The Empire Strikes Back, Dagobah is the swamp planet where Luke Skywalker trains to become a Jedi under the tutelage of the diminutive green Jedi master Yoda. The other creatures that inhabited the isolated planet were largely buglike or reptilian, blending in with the marsh. One of the biggest creatures that Luke encounters is the Dragonsnake, which at first appears menacing but ends up rescuing the droid R2-D2 from sinking into the muck.

On his Twitter, special effects make-up artist Nick Maley shared an unused design from The Empire Strikes Back. The creature is a dragon called Nogard (it’s unclear if this is the creature’s name or if it was originally meant to be the name of its species), which was designed and modeled but didn’t end up appearing in the film. Nogard is a creature with pebbled, froglike skin, held up by four muscular appendages and able to peer through the murky swamp air with a pair of glowing eyes on a distended skull. Although the dragon design didn’t make it into the final product, one of Nick Maley’s creations did survive: Yoda. The artist created the iconic Jedi master voiced by Frank Oz who in turn inspired the massively popular character Grogu in The Mandalorian, who is popularly known as “Baby Yoda.” He also went on to design make-up for popular films like Highlander, Clash of the Titans, and The Shining.

For a film as iconic and legendary as The Empire Strikes Back, it’s always a delightful surprise when there is anything new left to see from it. Every depth of the film has been plumbed so thoroughly that these surprises have to come from things like this that weren’t actually directly part of the project. However, it’s still a thrill that Star Wars fans have something new to appreciate even now.
