Quantic Dream’s next game, Star Wars Eclipse, has been revealed during The Game Awards 2021, with a teaser trailer hinting at what fans might have in store. Star Wars Eclipse looks to be a drastic change in direction for both Quantic Dream and the Star Wars franchise, with the game almost looking to be taking inspiration from darker sci-fi stories like Dune. The new game has been rumored for the last few months, but it wasn’t expected to be revealed this soon, surprising many fans.
For many years, Disney kept the Star Wars video games in the hands of Electronic Arts, and earlier this year, the company announced that it would begin allowing other developers to make Star Wars games. Over the last decade or so, EA has been the sole publisher of AAA Star Wars titles, with mixed reception from players. In that time, the company has made two Battlefront games and Jedi: Fallen Order, but also canceled several other games. Going forward, EA will still make new Star Wars titles, but other developers will also get the opportunity to play in the massive sci-fi sandbox created by George Lucas.
Now, Quantic Dream, developer of Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, is getting to do its own take on the universe. Set in the High Republic era, Star Wars Eclipse will give fans a new perspective on some of the otherwise unexplored history of the iconic franchise. Lightsabers, Yoda, Coruscant, and other planets can be seen in the new trailer, but the core story and gameplay remain a mystery. It has been reported that Star Wars Eclipse will be different from other Quantic Dream titles, so fans should expect less of a choose-your-own-adventure than previous games.
As of right now, there’s no word as to when Star Wars Eclipse will be released. Given the trailer appears to be nothing but pre-rendered footage, it seems as though it’s likely to still be far off. Disney also made the announcement that other developers would be given the opportunity to make new Star Wars games at the start of 2021. While it’s possible Quantic Dream has been working on it since before this year, it seems likely it’s still very early in development.
Similarly, Ubisoft is also making a Star Wars game. Details are scarce on the project, but the team behind The Division and the upcoming Avatar game is working on it. Rumors have suggested it may be a game that adapts The Mandalorian TV series, but nothing has been confirmed. It’s unlikely fans will know too much more about any of these upcoming big-budget Star Wars games until summer 2022 at the earliest.
