Which Star Wars walker is better: the Clone Wars-era AT-TE or the classic AT-AT? When it comes to iconic Star Wars vehicles, the many variations on the “walker” are among the most beloved. These machines of war can best be described as walking tanks, and are typified by their strong armor, heavy artillery and, of course, their animal-like ability to traverse rough terrain.

The first and most iconic version of the walker made its debut back in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. During the intense Battle of Hoth, the rebel base is invaded by gigantic AT-AT (All-Terrain Armored Transport) walkers that proceed to blast their way through the defense line. As the Rebel Alliance quickly learns, these titanic machines can’t be injured by simple laser blasts and, despite their success in taking down two of the walkers, the battle ultimately goes to the Empire. In Episode II – Attack of the Clones, audiences were introduced to the progenitor of the Empire’s AT-AT: the six-limbed AT-TE (All- Terrain Tactical Enforcer) used by the Republic’s clone army.

Both of these massive war machines were fearsome opponents on the battlefield, and each has its advantages over the other. However, is there a clear winner between the two? Which of these towering walkers was the strongest, most efficient, and most durable? The answer involves taking a look at the stats and abilities of each vehicle.

As the earliest version of the walker employed by what would eventually become the Galactic Empire, the AT-TE has a much smaller frame than the AT-AT. This reduced size gives the AT-TE more maneuverability than its larger successor. In addition to this, the AT-TE’s legs are shorter, giving the vehicle a lower center of gravity and making maneuvers like tripping the vehicle with tow cables impossible. When it comes to conquering rough terrain, the AT-TE also has advantages over the AT-AT; thanks to powerful gripping claws with magnetic abilities, an AT-TE can scale vertical planes and even fight on the exteriors of spacecraft. As seen in episode 10 of The Bad Batch, they can even scale and mount other vehicles. The small walker is also heavily armed on all sides and features eight rotating laser guns on its front and back as well as a massive cannon on its top.

Despite these strengths, the AT-AT still has a number of advantages. As seen throughout The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, the armor of the AT-TE is much weaker than that of the AT-AT. A single well-aimed missile can destroy an AT-TE with little further effort. If the vertical surface that an AT-TE is scaling happens to move or crumble, the walker will lose its grip and fall. Even though its longer legs make it easier to trip and harder to scale inclines, the AT-AT still emerges as the superior walker thanks to one big factor: its armor and weaponry. Conventional weapons can’t hurt the AT-AT’s exterior, and even though it only has four cannons instead of eight, this improved durability makes it difficult to destroy. When this is coupled with its gigantic size and increased interior capacity for cargo and troops, it’s clear to see why the AT-AT is the definitive Star Wars walker.
