The Star Wars Universe has been lit up by Kyber Crystals since well before audiences were introduced to the Galaxy in A New Hope. A considerable part of a young Jedi’s training, and coveted by the Sith for their immense power, these mysterious rocks have been guarded and sought after for seemingly forever. Those who have knowledge of them have a price on their head, and those that are careless with them often lose theirs. So, where do they come from, and what makes them so desirable?

Found and mined galaxy-wide (notably within the caves of the snow-covered planet Ilum) and treasured like oil on earth, kyber crystals contain enough energy to destroy planets and power space stations. In their natural state, they can nurture young Jedi and lead others down a dark path. Such is the potential of Kyber crystals; both the Jedi and the Sith want exclusive access to them. Their power, potential, and mysterious sentient-like behavior are key to the entire franchise.

Though there isn’t too much mention of the crystals on screen, evidence of their power is never hidden. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Master Yoda tells audiences that “Long ago, in forgotten times, when the Sith and Jedi fought for control of the galaxy, weapons there were of unimaginable power. Always at their heart, a kyber crystal was.” audiences have seen remnants of this technology in the Death Star, with eight crystals clearly forming its main canon. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) is prized and eventually deemed a threat for his knowledge of them, while the war-torn planet of Jedha was confirmed by Donnie Yen, who plays Force-sensitive Chirrut Îmwe as being a hotbed for them.

Off-screen, The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary mentions a huge crystal that ruptured and left an entire planet of petrified bodies at the Battle of Malachor. The nature of this destructive power has changed over time, however, as in Legends works such as Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, the likes of Darth Sidious’ synth crystals merely served as a conduit to concentrate and amplify existing Force powers. In later canon works like Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel, though, it appears this power comes from the crystals themselves, as is suggested by Galen Erso himself. What is clear either way is that, in their natural state, the kyber crystals are certainly not your average rock salt.

In fact, there is proof the crystals possess some form of sentience, which is shown best in a ritual known as The Gathering wherein – working in unison with the Force – crystals call out to the Jedi that they are best attuned with. And the Sith have historically proved they aren’t immune to the effects of the kyber crystals, either. Darth Vader famously lacked the living tissue needed to acquire the power of Force Lightning, until – when tracking Luke and Leia to the Planet Mimban in Star Wars Legends novel Splinter of the Mind’s Eye – the Sith stands so close to a powerful kyber crystal that he produces force lighting, too.

From the colossal crystal that obliterated Malachor to the finer fragments found by younglings as part of their Jedi training, Kyber Crystals always have, and always will be paramount to both the Jedi and the Sith. Whether held in esteem, worshipped, or abused, Star Wars has never hidden the fact that they will always be too valuable to let go of and too powerful to ignore.
