Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has now been out for just over two weeks and has proven that EA is capable of publishing an original, engaging, and fun Star Wars game. The game isn’t without its flaws, though, and among them is the main character, Cal Kestis. His blandness compared to the rest of the cast and disappointing customization features only highlight the fact that a character creator would have done the game a lot of good.

For a moment, it’s worth looking at Cal Kestis and his specific existence as the protagonist in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The character, who was made male to counter Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, is one whose blandness exceeds his intrigue. He is an utter disappointment because, not only does the game fail to show much depth in the character, but where Fallen Order could have gone an eccentric route with a protagonist outside the human species, Respawn went with human after countless Star Wars stories featuring humans as the main character.

Further, the elements of Cal that can be changed are considerably lame. Extra time taken to explore the game and complete additional tasks like fighting optional bosses will result in new cosmetic options like more ponchos. It’s a big letdown and only contributes to Cal’s blandness and uninteresting qualities.

A character creator element would have been a fantastic addition to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Instead of Cal, it would have been nice to have preset characters of different races, species, and genders. The end result could have looked something along the lines of Mass Effect but with the ability to play as alien species.

The fact is that there are enough first-person games with cardboard player characters. It’s a missed opportunity for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to feature the same.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order would have benefitted a great deal from a character creator. Not only would it have allowed players to express themselves creatively in a Star Wars narrative but it would have shown an openness on Respawn’s part to allow for playing as one of the many species in the galaxy. Maybe Respawn can pull a Mass Effect 2 and have Cal undergo some serious player-controlled plastic surgery in the inevitable Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2.
