Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: Crimson Reign #1

As War of the Bounty Hunters concludes, Charles Soule and Steve Cummings continue the second part of Star Wars’ new comic book trilogy with Crimson Reign #1. Qi’ra kicks off the story as the protagonist and attempts to cripple the Empire with Darth Maul’s criminal empire, Crimson Dawn. Most importantly, there are new wars brewing in the galaxy, like the Syndicate War—the second overarching event of Star Wars’ latest comic trilogy. Although this new chapter focuses on the galaxy’s scum and villainy, it also emphasizes the franchise’s title more than ever.

Since her debut in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra has maintained her position as a skillful agent and leader of Crimson Dawn—Darth Maul’s criminal organization. It’s clear that Qi’ra is one of the most significant players in the new Star Wars comics trilogy, which began with War of the Bounty Hunters, continues with Crimson Reign and concludes with the forthcoming miniseries Hidden Empire. During the first crossover event of the trilogy, Qi’ra gets to duel Darth Vader, showcasing her as an adept survivor. Even if fans have never gotten to see how she got to work closely with Darth Maul, her skillset in Charles Soule’s trilogy shows just how dangerous she is.

In Star Wars: Crimson Reign #1, Qi’ra reveals Crimson Dawn’s plans and why the “Star Wars” title applies to this trilogy more than other comics. She wishes to even the playing field in the galaxy for new opportunities to rise. Although she wants to push the power of Crimson Dawn forward, her priority lies in taking down Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, stating that they’re “the two most powerful people in the galaxy.” Qi’ra discusses the state of the criminal underworld and their “wars” (plural) against the Galactic Empire. Even though readers know what happens to Vader and Palpatine in Return of the Jedi, perhaps Qi’ra, Crimson Dawn, and other guilds throughout the galaxy will play a discreet role in the eventual defeat of Palpatine’s rule. There’s also a chance Qi’ra will ally with the heroes of Star Wars, whether it be the Rebels or the Resistance.

While mapping the galaxy’s future, Qi’ra meets with the Falleen, a race of reptilian humanoids. She conspires with Lord Gyuti, an agent representing Prince Xizor, an old Legends character from Shadows of the Empire, who is seemingly making a return. She reveals to Gyuti that the underworld must unite as another army to take down Vader and the Emperor, potentially foreshadowing the Rebel Alliance gaining secret supporters at the Battle of Endor. Palpatine calls Darth Vader to address the underworld situation, clearly addressing the union of these mercenaries, assassins, bounty hunters, and scum as a threat. These conflicts prove that the Galactic Empire deals with wars on all fronts, and they’re not just against the Rebels.

Soule’s new trilogy definitely has fans excited for whatever comes next. Qi’ra has come a long way from being a mere agent of Darth Maul as she directs Crimson Dawn. Crimson Reign is already fixing up some continuity errors caused by Han Solo’s carbonite abductions and hints at the return of more Legends characters. Qi’ra’s thirst for power and status in the galaxy may be a jagged path, but it’s clear that her intentions are currently the same as the Rebel Alliance’s cause. There’s a chance for her to return to the side of Star Wars’ heroes again, making amends with her old lover, Han Solo. Or perhaps she will end up igniting even more wars among the stars.
