Some of the recent TV spots for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker featured R2-D2 as Poe Dameron’s co-pilot. Set to release on December 20th, The Rise of Skywalker is one of the most anticipated films in Star Wars’ long and somewhat checkered history, being both the conclusion of the recent trilogy which started with The Force Awakens and also serving as the finale of the nine-film-long Skywalker saga.

As the release date for The Rise of Skywalker draws ever closer, Disney seems to be releasing a new television advertisement for the film on a near-daily basis. Fans have already seen hints of Dark Rey and her final battle against Kylo Ren, as well as a plethora of Imperial ships dotting the skies and rag-tag groups of Resistance fighters, but one detail which was delivered quickly has gone unnoticed by most fans… until now.

During a recent TV spot for The Rise of Skywalker, one eagle-eyed fan on Twitter noticed a certain omni-present Star Wars character hiding out in the background of one of the scenes. Upon closer inspection, it’s apparent that in multiple Star Wars TV spots now R2-D2 has been in the co-pilot’s seat behind Poe Dameron, proving once and for all the recently neglected droid will finally once again return as an important figure in the upcoming saga’s conclusion.

As evident in the compilation trailer embedded above, Disney is making no real effort to hide R2-D2’s role in The Rise of Skywalker, although both of the recent scenes featuring the droid do pass by rather quickly. With other animatronic characters like C-3P0 and BB-8 are receiving the majority of The Rise of Skywalker’s attention, fans can only wonder why their favorite blue-and-white trashcan has been largely ignored in recent films in the Star Wars franchise.

With only two weeks to go until the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens worldwide, it’s only natural for fans to be clinging to any kind of information which can be gleaned from the plethora of short TV spots Disney is releasing about the film. Although RD-D2, C-3P0, and BB-8’s role in the final plot will likely go unknown until the movie finally releases to the public, fans can rest assured knowing their favorite droid from the original Star Wars franchise is still alive and still out there fighting the good fight. Nothing is more comforting than seeing R2 in the back of an X-Wing, after all.
