Welcome to our Star Wars countdown. Ahead of the release of The Rise of Skywalker, we’ve been looking back at all of the previous movies within the saga. We’ve covered the prequels, spin-offs Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story and we’ve also given our opinions on the original trilogy – as well as The Force Awakens.

So now, next up, it’s The Last Jedi. Has there ever been a more divisive Star Wars product? That’s debatable. Here’s what we liked about it – and what we didn’t.

10 Best: It’s Visually Stunning

Star Wars has always had rather beautiful aesthetics, with its glorious worlds making it unique. But, even for the franchise’s stands, The Last Jedi was rather gorgeous to look at.

Whether it be the bright red design of Supreme Leader Snoke’s throne room, the white and red of Crait, the picturesque view of Canto Bight or even the grassy environment of Resistance base D’Qar, everything definitely looked the part. And we’re hoping that the final movie of the sequel trilogy can give us something similar when it comes out later this month.

9 Worst: The Humour

While we commend The Last Jedi for being bold and adventurous, in stark contrast to the rehash that was The Force Awakens, not all of its decisions went down well with fans. And some took issue with the humor in the movie which, when compared to other installments in the franchise, seems a little off.

General Hux being on the receiving end of a ‘your mom’ joke set alarm bells off while some of the scenes involving Luke Skywalker, particularly when he threw the lightsaber, seemed insulting to fans. This is something Disney have to get right next time out.

8 Best: Kylo Ren

Star Wars The Last Jedi 5 Best & 5 Worst Things

Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens was intriguing but Adam Driver takes the character to new heights in The Last Jedi. He starts off in a similar position to where we’d last seen him – basically Supreme Leader Snoke’s lapdog. But, over the course of the movie, Kylo goes on a journey of discovery.

And he ends the movie as Supreme Leader, having murdered Snoke and blamed his old master’s death on Rey. He is perhaps the only character within the movie who truly evolves and we can’t wait to see how he behaves now he has the galaxy under his thumb.

7 Worst: Luke Skywalker

Star Wars The Last Jedi 5 Best & 5 Worst Things

You remember Luke Skywalker from the original trilogy, right? The person who would do anything to help his friends, who never hid from a fight and who always did the right thing, no matter how difficult. Well it’s a good thing you do – because Rian Johnson clearly doesn’t.

The way Luke was during The Last Jedi didn’t please Mark Hamill, who constantly tried to warn the fans. And, watching the blockbuster, you just couldn’t but feel that you were watching some hideous clone of Luke who didn’t care a jot about anything or anyone besides himself. As far as character assassinations go, this was a big one.

6 Best: Luke Skywalker’s Final Act

Okay, so we didn’t like the way Luke Skywalker was portrayed and written as in The Last Jedi. But even we, as critics, have to admit that his force projection at the end of his movie was a brilliant twist.

Audiences had, for the most part, just thought that Luke had tidied himself up a little for his showdown with his nephew, Kylo Ren. But for him to then reveal that he’s merely a projection, all the way from his sanctuary on Ach’ To, was something nobody expected. Touche Rian Johnson, touche.

5 Worst: Leia Is Mary Poppins

Star Wars The Last Jedi 5 Best & 5 Worst Things

Of course, Leia Organa has always been able to use the force in some ways. She detected Luke Skywalker’s whereabouts back in The Empire Strikes Back while she also uses the ancient power to confirm Luke’s claim that she, like him, is the child of Darth Vader.

But come on, really? The decision to have Leia soar through the air like some Jedi Mary Poppins had people cringing in their seats. The way she moves so gracefully through the air must have taken years of training (especially the whole being able to breathe in space part). So we’re hoping, like really hoping, that some explanation of Leia’s amazing force prowess is given to us in The Rise of Skywalker.

4 Best: The Throne Room Scene

Star Wars The Last Jedi 5 Best & 5 Worst Things

While we accept that the throne room scene involving Kylo Ren, Rey and Supreme Leader Snoke is a bit of a rehash of the same scene involving Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi, that doesn’t make it any less captivating.

The scenes where Snoke interrogates Rey paint him as a formidable villain – only for our expectations to be subverted. The showdown between Kylo, Rey and the Praetorian guards shows off some remarkable choreography, while we didn’t see the destruction of the Skywalker lightsaber coming in the slightest. This, out of all of the scenes within the movie, was our favorite.

3 Worst: Killing Off Snoke

But while the throne room scene is glorious, we have just one complaint. And that’s the decision to kill off Supreme Leader Snoke – without giving us any answers or explanations about his character.

Snoke is perhaps the biggest mystery of the sequel trilogy and to have Kylo slice him in half ahead of schedule, while a brave twist, is one of the things that has angered fans the most. With Emperor Palpatine now back in the fray for the final movie of the franchise, we may not get the answers we want. And we can’t help but fear the whole ‘Palpatine was Snoke this whole time’ will be used – which would make the villain even less formidable than he now already seems.

2 Best: Finn Kills Captain Phasma

Star Wars The Last Jedi 5 Best & 5 Worst Things

The Last Jedi wasn’t the best movie for Finn, with John Boyega’s character getting shafted so Rey, Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker and Supreme Leader Snoke can take center stage. But it was hugely satisfying seeing him kill Captain Phasma during a epic confrontation of Snoke’s burning Star Destroyer.

Phasma was a loathsome character. She looked cool but was a traitor and her loyalty to the First Order, for like no good reason, was nauseating. So it’s a good job that Finn knocked that ‘Chrome Dome’ right off her head. This is one character who really should stay gone, too. We don’t want everybody joining Palpatine for the final battle…

1 Worst: Canto Bight

While the whole throne room scene is going on, Rian Johnson made the reckless decision to have the action hop over to Canto Bight, where Finn and Rose Tico are given the mission of meeting an old codebreaker in a bid to help the Resistance survive.

This maybe, just maybe would have worked if their task had had a satisfying conclusion. But it doesn’t! In the words of Luke Skywalker it turned into just ‘one big Bantha chase’. They don’t meet the codebreaker, they get captured instead. But look – there are space horses! Eurgh. We can’t say seeing the horses in The Rise of Skywalker trailer exactly sits well with us, even if they seem to be involved in a much cooler sequence this time around.
