Star Wars: The Old Republic, Bioware’s MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe, is set to receive a new expansion, its first in almost three years. The game, called Onslaught, is coming in September and will be free to all subscribers.

The expansion was announced by Charles Boyd, creative director for Star Wars: The Old Republic, at the recent Star Wars Celebration event in Chicago. During the announcement, players were given quite a large amount of details about the upcoming pack.

The storyline centers around Darth Malgus, who is back and eager to lead the Sith in an attack on the republic. Players can either stop him or aid him.

The story takes place in several locations, including Onderon, an Old-Republic era world that is said to contain monsters, barbarians, and nobles. It’s a planet of untamed jungles and savage beats, which you must explore in order to find allies. It also has a dangerous moon called Dxun that will play host to a new operation.

Another new location is called Mek-Sha, which is spaceport full of lawless smugglers, gangsters, cargo runners, and refugees. Described as the Galatic Crossroads, this fuelling station was built in the hallows of a mined out asteroid.

Alongside these new locations, players can expect to find a climatic flashpoint in the storyline, which is set on the classic planet of Corellia.

Onslaught will also bring a new playable species, the Nautolans, as well as an increased level cap of 75.

Further changes include a major renovation of gear, including new set bonuses and a new item type, tactical items. These new items will directly alter your abilities and play style. Items will be available through Player vs Environment, Player Vs Player, Galactic command, and crafting options, with all being viable options to gain new gear.

Speaking about the changes, referred to as Spoils Of War, Boyd says “Spoils of War is our plan to make gearing out your characters more fun, more accessible, and more customizable than ever before.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic is an MMORPG with a free-to-play component, as well as a subscription service. Subscribing removes restrictions placed on gamers, including a reduced levelling speed and credit limits.

Onslaught is said to be free for all subscribers, but there are no details regarding any of the content being available to those on the free-to-play model.
