Before there were Stormtroopers, there were Clone Troopers. It’s debatable now which is more pervasive in Star Wars lore thanks to the clones’ sustained prominence in several different branches of the saga— including, possibly, the upcoming second season of The Mandalorian. Clones formed the Grand Army of the Republic in its last days, and have made some of the most fascinating characters in Star Wars.

For as many different individual clones as there are, there are as many different types. Numerous different divisions and specialties made up the Grand Army of the Republic, with new iterations being added all the time.

10 Scuba Trooper

Clone troopers spend most of their time in space, but often they battle in a variety of different environments. Sometimes, that’s underwater. The first Scuba Trooper appeared in the 2003 animated micro-series Clone Wars by Genndy Tartakovsky, who has been behind some of the greatest animated shows of the 21st century.

This trooper incorporated the scuba elements seamlessly into the existing clone design. A second version appeared in the computer-animated Clone Wars series by Dave Filoni, but it might not have been as cool as the first.

9 Shock Trooper

The Shock Trooper made a brief appearance at the end of Revenge of the Sith, but their impact was immediate. These red-clad troopers serve as the elite units of the Grand Army of the Republic, which explains their presence in the Senate chamber when Yoda and Darth Sidious fought one of the greatest duels in Star Wars history. Shock troopers acted as a military police unit on Coruscant, assigned to high-profile dignitaries and installations.

8 ARC Trooper

The ARC Trooper (Advanced Recon Commando) was the best of the best in the clone army. These clones were chosen from the ranks for their skill and experience, and a number of prominent clones in the animated series rose to this position.

Echo, Fives, and— sadly, given the events of the final episode of the Clone Wars— Jesse, all became ARC Troopers. These troops were assigned the most difficult tasks, and their gear reflected their broad spectrum of ability. They upgraded with a shoulder pauldron, kama skirt, and additional weapons.

7 212th Attack Battalion

A number of ARC Troopers served within the broader ranks of the 212th Attack Battalion. This legion of troops was led by Jedi Master and General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone Commander CC-2224, also known as Cody. This group wore distinctive orange markings and fought in several of the biggest engagements of the Clone Wars.

The 212th got the most screen time in Revenge of the Sith, which made sense as their ultimate betrayal of Kenobi stung the most. It’s unclear what became of Cody, even now, despite the fact that fans know several other clones, including Captain Rex, survived.

6 501st Legion

Captain Rex is one of the most fascinating characters in the Star Wars saga now. He’s also a critical member of the 501st Legion, though he didn’t make his first appearance until the 2008 Clone Wars animated movie. The 501st wore blue markings on their armor and served under the command of Anakin Skywalker. This particular group of troopers inspired the prominent 501st Legion, a worldwide costuming organization of fans, some of whom actually served as troopers in The Mandalorian.

5 Bad Batch

The seventh and final season of the Clone Wars introduced the Bad Batch, ostensibly a group of misfits who nonetheless proved their worth in battle. The squad performed so well that they’re going to be the focus of their own animated series in the future.

The Bad Batch wore individual suits of armor specialized to their specific roles in the group, but share a common color scheme that is mostly red and black. The troops made a great unit, made even better with the addition of Echo.

4 Flame Trooper

There has been some variation on a flame-throwing trooper in every era of Star Wars. The First Order employed one on Jakku, and an Incinerator Trooper made a mess of things at the end of the first season of The Mandalorian.

The first chronologically was the Flame Trooper from the Grand Army of the Republic. This trooper roasted Geonosians in one of the biggest battles of the Clone Wars. They wore heavily insulated orange and yellow suits.

3 Cold Assault Trooper

The thermal suit that the Flame Troopers wore was actually based on a clone variant introduced a year earlier. The Cold Assault Trooper in turn was based on the original concept art for the Snowtrooper from The Empire Strikes Back, by legendary concept artist Ralph McQuarrie.

The Cold Assault Trooper integrates that early Snowtrooper design with that of the Phase I trooper in a very interesting way. The blue markings remain in place, but the visor morphs into the clone one.

2 Clone Trooper Phase 1

The Phase 1 Clone Trooper is the original trooper in the ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic. Like many other variants in the ranks, it seamlessly blends its inspirations together to create something new.

The first iteration of the Clone Trooper helmet combines elements of the classic Stormtrooper that the clones will eventually evolve into and the helmet of Jango Fett— and of course, Boba Fett— who they were cloned from. Boba Fett’s fingerprints are all over the Star Wars saga, though it’s debatable whether or not he should return.

1 Clone Trooper Phase 2

The Clone Trooper eventually becomes the Stormtrooper, and that transition is crystal clear in the Phase 2 version of the armor. Introduced after battle testing the first phase, Phase 2 armor marks the tragic waypoint between the Galactic Republic and Empire.

These clones executed the horrific Order 66 on the Jedi Order and cracked down on early dissenters to Emperor Palpatine. Eventually, they too would be discarded, thrown away when no longer needed.
