George Lucas created some of the most recognizable and iconic vehicles in Hollywood cinema with Star Wars. The ships and vehicles from the beloved trilogy are all iconic in their own right but some stand above the rest. They instill nothing but nostalgia as a symbol of hope against imperial oppression. And with the new trilogy finished, shows like The Mandalorian are introducing new ships, characters, and locations with nothing but praise from fans.

But looking at the original trilogy, fans still get excited to see X-Wing dogfights and the Millieum Falcon slip away from Imperial Star Destroyers. With that, here are the best ships from the original Star Wars trilogy.

10 Imperial Shuttle

Shuttle Tyderioin, you are cleared for landing. The Imperial shuttle acted as the Emporer’s command and transport ship when he wasn’t stationed at the Death Star. Though it only made a brief appearance, the shuttle’s symmetrical design was stunning and saved Luke from perishing with the Death Star 2 in Return of the Jedi. The ship separates itself from others as being the transport of high ranking officials, hence why the Emperor and Darth Vader were common frequent flyers.

9 Y-Wing

These pesky bombers may be slow, but slow and steady always wins the race. The Y-wings were the bombers of the Rebellion and made an unsuccessful trench run in the Death Star in A New Hope. But despite their failure, they’re highly sought out for their tactical advantages and even came back for the Battle of Endor.

Not only that, but Y-Wings are most commonly associated with X-wings, a dynamic duo of sorts. The reason being X-Wings are usually tasked with escorting the Y-Wings to their target, but unfortunately, that didn’t quite work at the Battle of Yavin.

8 A-Wing

The fastest ship in the Rebellion fleet, the A-Wings made their first screen appearance in Return of the Jedi alongside B-Wings. Not only that, but fans often forget the heroic efforts of one A-Wing in particular in Return of the Jedi that sent the Super Star Destroyer crashing down into the Death Star 2. Arvel Crynyd, a rebel pilot, was hit by a TIE Fighter and took Vader’s Executor with him. For his efforts, the A-Wings are remembered as a staple of the Rebellion, one that started the beginning of the end of the Empire.

7 Star Destroyer

After reading the introductory text, fans were greeted with a fleeing Tantive IV with Princess Leia aboard, and an intimidating ship chasing them. That ship, the Star Destroyer, became one of the most iconic villainous ships in cinema history.

Nothing says the Dark Side like Darth Vader and a fleet of these staring down at the Rebels, not to mention the Super Star Destroyer, which was five times bigger. However, no matter how hard they try they’ll never catch the Falcon.

6 Tantive IV

Though the ship only made a brief appearance in New Hope, it was the first one fans laid their eyes on when Star Wars came to the big screen. The small transport ship was the only one available as a means of escape from the Empire in hopes of getting the plans to Yavin 4. Don’t let looks deceive as this innocent looking ship carried plans imperative to the destruction of the Death Star.

5 TIE Interceptor

The speedier TIE Fighter in the Imperial fleet, the TIE Interceptor made their first appearance in Return of the Jedi at the Battle of Endor. Their sharp look and aggressive flying nature kept Lando and Co. on their toes on their journey to the Death Star 2’s core.

However, Grand Moff Tarkin oversaw the production of these TIE variants to compete with the X-Wings and A-Wings. Having noticed the Death Star Canon’s inability to shoot down the X-Wings, Tarkin realized he had to take them down ship by ship.

4 B-Wing

One of the more surreal ships on this list, the B-Wing (like many on this list) didn’t come about until Return of the Jedi, seeing as the Rebellion needed every ship in their fleet to compete. A combination of the X-Wing and Y-Wing, the B-Wing is a bombing aircraft despite its thin shape. Instead of an X-Wing expanding its attack foils, this ship folds its wings flat against its body, making it capable of squeezing in and out of tight spaces.

3 TIE Fighter

The Twin Ion Engine (TIE) fighter is the Empire’s go-to boasting some impressive speed capabilities, not to mention the sheer number of these they have. Since A New Hope, the TIE Fighter has meant nothing but dread for the Rebellion, stopping at nothing to take down the Millineum Falcon and the rest of the Rebel fleet.

These have been an image of the Empire for decades and always will. Vader’s TIE Advanced and TIE Bomber introduced new bombing and speed capabilities, but the original TIE Fighter takes the gold.

2 X-Wing

Arguably the most iconic starfighter in the Star Wars universe, the X-Wing was originally used by the Empire until they were stolen by the Rebellion. After all, they’re rebels so it makes sense. Pilots Wedge Antilles and Luke Skywalker were some of the best to sit in their cockpit, outmaneuvering TIE Fighters, Interceptors, and Darth Vader.

The new trilogy brought a fixed version of the beloved starfighter, but real Star Wars fans know the original X-Wing is one of the most iconic creations from George Lucas.

1 Millennium Falcon

This isn’t a surprise because fans know the Millenium Falcon is worthy of all the praise it’s received. A symbol of the Rebellion, a beacon of hope, the Star Wars franchise is nothing without the falcon and the one-liners from its pilot, Han Solo. As the most hated ship in the Empire, the Falcon has taken down countless fighters and outmaneuvered the Vader and his fleet on numerous occasions.
