A planned trilogy of Star Wars movies from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss has been cancelled. Benioff and Weiss have chosen to walk away from their deal with Lucasfilm, saying that their schedule is too full.

Benioff and Weiss were set to write and produce the trilogy of films, which already had their first release date set for 2022. Rian Johnson, who directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is also working on a new film trilogy for the franchise. While little is currently known about these films, they are intended to tell new stories within the galaxy far, far away, as the Skywalker saga will be ending with the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this December.

Deadline broke the news of Benioff and Weiss’ parting ways with Lucasfilm and their intended Star Wars trilogy. In a statement, the pair said, “Getting to talk about Star Wars with [George Lucas] and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime.” However, in August Benioff and Weiss signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix, and it’s that deal which has left them with no time to spare for Star Wars. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy left the door open for their possible return, saying, “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

The success of Game of Thrones meant that Benioff and Weiss were in demand before the series had even ended. In February 2018, Lucasfilm announced that they would start work on a brand new Star Wars trilogy after Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season had aired, and in May 2019 Disney revealed a release schedule that had the trilogy slated for 2022, 2024, and 2026. With Benioff and Weiss now departing, it’s unclear whether Disney will bring new creatives onboard to continue developing their story ideas, or start over fresh.

The writing and producing duo have become somewhat controversial figures. A planned TV series for HBO called Confederate, which was pitched as an alternative history drama set in a world where the South won the American Civil War, was cancelled after a vocal backlash to the concept. The final season of Game of Thrones was also lambasted by many fans as a disappointment, and Benioff and Weiss’ impatience to move on to their Star Wars trilogy was pinpointed as a reason why season 8 – which was just six episodes long – felt so rushed.

If the official statement is to be believed, Benioff and Weiss’ Netflix deal has taken precedence over their Star Wars movies. Disney franchises do tend to monopolize the time and attention of whichever writers and directors are placed in charge of them, so it is hard to imagine how Benioff and Weiss would have found time to put together Netflix shows and movies while at the same time ushering in the next era of Star Wars. Though some may be disappointed by the news, others would probably agree – for one reason or another – that this may be for the best.
