Amazon has launched the first season of Starfinder on Alexa. The multipart interactive audio adventure game set in a futuristic science-fantasy world where players can influence the outcome of the story features voice actors Laura Bailey (The Last of Us Part II) and Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly).

The RPG episodes, which take place within the universe of the famous tabletop game, draw inspiration from other science-fiction franchises like Star Wars, Alien, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Warhammer 40,000. Bailey and Fillion are joined by 11 other voice actors for 13 hours of gameplay on Alexa-enabled devices, including Amazon Echo, Fire TV, and the Alexa mobile app. Episodes 1 through 3 are available now, with episodes 4 through 6 premiering in October.

Paizo, which originally specialized in game aids and adventures for Dungeons & Dragons is the team behind the Starfinder tabletop game. The company worked closely with Amazon to reimagine the game for Alexa. The free-to-play pilot episode of Starfinder, “Scoundrels in the Spike,” was released last December 2019 and boasts a 4.6/5 star rating. The new game hopes to attract fans of the tabletop version as well as new fans. Just as in the original tabletop version, players voice commands like “attack goblin” or “use healing serum.”

“We’re thrilled to bring together creative sci-fi storytellers with top industry voice talent, to offer an unfounded immersive audio game experience,” says VP of Amazon Entertainment Devices and Services Marc Whitten. “The casual gaming category is becoming increasingly popular and the Starfinder skill for Alexa is a great example of how audio and voice-enabled entertainment is evolving to entertain the masses.”

Given the current coronavirus crisis, gaming is thriving as more people stay at home. Engagement on Alexa has quadrupled in the past two years, with more than 100,000 Alexa Skills currently available. Starfinder arrives at an ideal time as more and more customers opt for voice games.

Starfinder players are afforded a variety of access points to the game and can resume playing at any time and from any location by simply saying “Alexa, play the Starfinder game.” The pilot is free to play, and players can purchase each episode for $1.99 or the full season for $9.99.
