Warning! Spoilers for Static: Season One #1

Static is fighting the racist high school bully Hotstreak in the upcoming Milestone reboot debut from DC Comics. After Virgil Hawkins discovers the electromagnetic powers he received during the Big Bang, another student named Frank has revealed his fire-centric abilities.

Following a two-decade-long hiatus from comics, Static is returning with his own series in Milestone’s relaunch, along with other superheroes like Icon, Rocket, and Hardware among others. Static’s self-titled series will kick things off for the rebooted Dakotaverse, with the first glimpse at the event that changes the city forever: the Big Bang. However, Virgil’s origin story has been updated since the last time it was told in the ‘90s, as previewed in Milestone Returns: Infinite Edition #0. The fresh vision for Static comes with echoes to his history, most notably the animated series Static Shock which introduced him to many fans when they were kids. A key villain from Static’s past iterations who was also given powers during the event is returning in Static: Season One #1, written by Vita Ayala with art by Nikolas Draper-Ivey and ChrisCross.

As revealed by SyFy, teenager Virgil Hawkins will face his first villain in Static: Season One #1 in the form of Hotstreak. “Episode One” is fittingly titled “Trial by Fire” in reference to an older Static Shock story. The series debut returns to the life-changing scene of the protest where Alva Industries gas had been dispersed by police. Dakota’s youth were all affected differently, as some transformed into monsters and others were given powers. However, a racist bully from Virgil’s high school named Frank was given the ability to manifest fire, renaming himself “Hotstreak.” Frank had previously told Virgil he wasn’t black enough, adding to their confrontation when they realize they both have powers. Static: Season One #1 releases on Tuesday, June 15.

Static’s return to comics has been loaded with potential for a long time, and the elevated personal stakes shown in Virgil’s first legitimate fight as a meta-human is a promising start. Similar to both Static’s original comics and the animated series Static Shock, Hotstreak is consistently the first big bad that Virgil has to face. His character has largely remained the same, aside from some name changes. However, he’s never known Virgil’s secret identity right off the bat. When Virgil eventually puts on his costume, it’s doubtful that Hotstreak wouldn’t immediately recognize the electromagnetic superhero.

In the original run of Milestone Media, the Big Bang played a pivotal part in the stories of each major Milestone superhero, inevitably bringing them together. For Static to be the introduction to this newly imagined universe seems to allude to a potential crossover down the line, following the conclusion of the three titles’ first seasons. The premiere issue alludes to an investigation into the Big Bang, and the corporation behind the experimental tear gas. An even greater villain than Hotstreak seems to be around the corner for Static to track down.
