Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will see hiding in plain sight return to the popular franchise.

Early in the Assassin’s Creed series, protagonists were synonymous with their stark white cloaks and hoods as they hid amongst the crowds before sticking their unwitting targets with their hidden blades. As the series progressed, these stealth mechanics gave way to a focus on combat with RPG elements thrown in, as well as customizable outfits meant to set you apart from the masses rather than blend in.

This change, of course, came after Assassin’s Creed III, and the series has moved away from all-white everything. In congruence with the color change, it also abandoned many of the stealth elements that were initially one of the hallmarks of the franchise. Valhalla plans to serve as a return to its roots as old becomes new again, and gamers who prefer a more stealthy approach will have new gameplay options to explore.

Assistant level design director Laurence Letalien said in an interview with GameSpot, “We do have this mechanic of disguise where you can put your hood on and in different locations where you want to blend in more get less detected, you can put it on, and it’s a mechanic you can use to social stealth between crowds. We are also bringing back the social stealth of the monks walking around you can blend with them.”

One of the most recognizable aspects of early Assassin’s Creed titles was causing havoc before running as fast as you could to a nearby gaggle of monks and losing any hapless guards chasing you.

Just why a group monks don’t seem to mind a blood-covered frock, we may never know. But without them, we wouldn’t have the now-iconic image from the first trailer for the original Assassin’s Creed, where Altair disappears amongst a group of monks after an assassination. So think you, you morally questionable monks.

For those fans who may have lamented the series move away from stealth, this return should be welcome news. But for those who still like to smash their way through, you can choose to ignore these stealth mechanics and berserker your way through some Templars. It’s the best of both worlds, and whichever way you want to play, you can be sure you’ll send many Templars to Valhalla.
