The Pokemon GO fad had the attention of the whole nation just a year ago, but the craze has definitely faded. Plenty of players are still dedicated to collecting ’em all, but the active player base is way down from last summer. The game’s popularity with the casual audience has dropped so much, that Stephen Colbert even took a swing at the Pokemon GO IP in a recent monologue.

We reported last week on rumors that Pokemon GO may have been a tool used by Russians attempting to interfere with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and Stephen Colbert brought up the same story in a monologue this week. As a part of the setup for a series of political jokes, the late night talk show host took an early swing at people who are still playing Pokemon GO now that the craze has mostly ended.

The joke arrives very early in the monologue, so here’s the clip for readers who would like to hear it…

Even as active Pokemon GO players, we’ll admit to chuckling at that one. Although it is true that the game isn’t the worldwide phenomenon that it was in the summer of 2016, Pokemon GO has come a long way in the last year and is still making improvements all the time.

Battle Raids, though controversial and plagued with bugs, have brought a lot of lapsed players back to the game and Niantic seems to be preparing for the launch of Gen 3, which will also help. Players are still begging for a trading mechanic and PvP battles, so hopefully those improvements will arrive in the next year, as well.

Even after trading arrives, it seems nearly impossible that Pokemon GO could ever return to the level of popularity that it held in late 2016. Like Colbert said, fidget spinners came along to take its place as the flavor of the week and the popularity of even those are already on the decline.

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
