A new trailer for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin appears to recreate the iconic drawbridge scene from the original Final Fantasy. Stranger of Paradise is an upcoming Soulslike with a story that’s a dark retelling of Final Fantasy I, with the Warriors of Light obsessing over getting revenge against FF’s Garland and Chaos.

In the original NES version of FF1, once the Warriors of Light defeat Garland and return Princess Sarah to her family, they are rewarded with the completion of a drawbridge – allowing them to leave Cornelia and access the rest of the world. Once the party crosses the bridge, a cutscene plays, showing the silhouettes of the Warriors of Light in the foreground, with Castle Cornelia in the distance. A text crawl plays on the screen, talking about how their adventure is just beginning, and how they will soon learn the significance of the four crystals that they hold in their hands. This scene has appeared in every port of FF1, including the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, and has been referenced in later entries (FF4 has a similar scene when Cecil and Kain leave Baron).

Square Enix held a Stranger of Paradise livestream, to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series. The livestream featured a trailer that showed the new Warriors of Light crossing the drawbridge, thus faithfully recreating the iconic scene from FF1. The bridge-crossing scene can be seen on the official Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin Twitter page.

The Stranger of Paradise livestream also showed a trailer with a prequel scene, as Garland kidnaps Princess Sarah and carves his way through the Cornelian soldiers. This moment happens before the beginning events of of FF1, seeing as the first quest in the game involves traveling to the Chaos Shrine and saving Princess Sarah. The released footage for Stranger of Paradise has revealed that the upcoming game’s protagonist is also named Garland, so it’s possible this trailer is a fakeout – and the scene happens near the end of the game, as part of a new Final Fantasy time loop.

The recreation of the iconic drawbridge scene in Stranger of Paradise was a good way to celebrate the anniversary of the series. If the game manages to hit its March release date and isn’t pushed back into 2023, then it will be a fitting tribute for the Final Fantasy series on its 35th birthday. The world of FF1 is being remade on modern systems, offering a glimpse at the original Final Fantasy world that its creators couldn’t have imagined back in the ’80s.
