The dynamic between Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley was meant to be much different when Stranger Things season 3 went into production. The season, which dropped on Netflix in July 2019, introduced the world to Maya Hawke and her fan-favorite performance as Robin, opposite Joe Keery. Steve and Robin served as half of the Scoops Troop at the center of a major subplot in season 3. The pair struck up a special friendship by the end of the season, but it almost took a romantic turn.
Steve and Robin worked together at Scoops Ahoy in the Starcourt Mall. Even though Steve was still trying to keep up with his “cool guy” routine, Robin had a tendency to poke fun at his lack of luck with the ladies. Robin easily translated the radio transmission from the Russians that Dustin caught and wound up helping the crew infiltrate the base under the mall. Steve and Robin were caught and tortured for information, but she remained calm and kept her loyalty to her newfound friends. After bonding with Steve, she revealed the truth about her feelings with her coworker.
Steve and Robin got severely sick following their time on truth serum, so they spent sometime puking their guts out in the mall bathroom. Following the binge, Robin revealed that she wasn’t obsessed with Steve because she was in love with him, but instead, she had a crush on the girl that gave Steve so much attention. It took a moment for Steve to understand that Robin was gay but he was very accepting of the news. The twist with Robin’s sexuality almost never came to be, because the original plan was for the pair to get together romantically in the end. For much of the season, Steve seemed to develop a crush on Robin and realized she was perfect for him. Hawke and the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, came to a different conclusion late in the game.
The Decision Regarding Robin’s Sexuality Happened Late In Season 3
The decision for Robin to reveal that she was a lesbian wasn’t established until the fourth or fifth episode were being filmed. Hawke, the Duffers, and the producers started to have conversations about it and they believed Robin and Steve shouldn’t end up together. They agreed it would make sense if Robin came out to Steve in a vulnerable scene, and it went on to become one of the best moments in season 3. Hawke was very proud to unveil this side of her character to have LGBT representation, while the team behind Stranger Things was fully supportive.
Even though Stranger Things is set in the 1980s, the situation revolving around Robin’s big coming out moment is still relevant in today’s world. The season seemed to be steering in the direction of Steve and Robin getting together but that would have been the safe and predictable option. Instead, the series gave Robin a more complex narrative without using her sexuality as a total shock factor. Just because Steve and Robin aren’t together romantically, it doesn’t mean their relationship is over. As seen at the end of season 3, the journey of Steve and Robin’s friendship is far from over.
