A new video promoting Stranger Things season 4 shows off the ’80s era costumes the kids will be wearing in the new batch of episodes. The show, which combines elements of throwback pop culture like classic Amblin films and Stephen King novels into a new fantasy-horror adventure, premiered on Netflix in 2016. It stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, and Sadie Sink. Stranger Things season 4 is coming in summer 2022.

Stranger Things has taken place over a relatively short time span in the mid-’80s, with season 1 picking up in November 1983 and the new season continuing the story in spring of 1986. The series has included many references, large and small, to the culture and fads of the ’80s, including setting a large portion of season 3 inside a massive shopping mall. However, few things are more indicative of the era than the characters’ costumes.

Netflix has released a new promotional video showing the lead cast of Stranger Things 4 transforming from their regular street clothes to their ’80s costumes for the show. Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) is shown in a striped sweater holding a basketball, Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) wears his signature hat with a shirt reading “The Hellfire Club,” which is also the name of the first episode of the season, and Sadie Sink (Max) is shown listening to a Walkman while wearing a cable-knit sweater reminiscent of Mrs. Voorhees’ in Friday the 13th. Also present are Finn Wolfhard (Mike) in a lime green jacket, Noah Schnapp (Will) in a dorky patterned button-down, Priah Ferguson (Erica) in a belted yellow dress, and Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) with hair now down to her shoulders, in a dress covered in pastel stripes.

While most plot details haven’t yet been released, the Stranger Things season 4 trailer shows that one of the major locations of this season will be a haunted house known as the Creel House. The teaser also implies that time travel may be a major element of the season. The episode titles, which were released today, also hint at the possible appearance of a Dungeons & Dragons-esque lich as well as the potential return of Billy.

The most significant aspect of Stranger Things is the way it has been following these young characters through the formative years of their lives. Their changing attitudes as they come of age are certainly reflected in their clothing and how it changes (or doesn’t). For characters like the effervescent goofball Dustin, their look has remained much the same, but the events of the series have caused many of the kids to mature early with the weight of the world on their shoulders, and that is reflected in how some of them have abandoned the kiddie fashions of previous seasons.
