Actress Natalia Dyer has opened up about the filming delay of Stranger Things season 4 and the advantages it has created for the writing team. Stranger Things took the world by storm when it made its debut on Netflix in 2016, where it quickly became one of the streaming service’s biggest hits to date, and has since penetrated the zeitgeist like few shows have, becoming more and more popular with each new season. Filming had begun on season 4 of the hit series, but was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, before filming shut down, Stranger Things was ahead of schedule in production.
Stranger Things season 3 premiered on Netflix in the summer of 2019, where the phenomenon was as popular as ever on the streaming service. In fact, season 3 became Stranger Things’ most-watched season to date. The season was littered with twists, turns, and a myriad of narrative surprises for passionate fans of the series. One such surprise was the supposed death of Jim Hopper (David Harbour), a fan favorite character, at the end of the season. Since Stranger Things season 4 has stalled in production due to the current climate, fans have been anxiously wondering what this delay could mean for the new season’s release date and how it might affect production. Luckily, Dyer has provided some details about how the delay is working to the series’ advantage.
In an interview with THR, Natalia Dyer discussed how the production delay for Stranger Things season 4 has worked to the show’s benefit. When discussing how the writing process for the new season is different this time around, she stated,
“Normally, we get the first few scripts, and then they have to keep writing due to the schedule of it. And it takes a while to craft a script. So, normally, there’s a kind of ‘writing as we’re going,’ but it seems they’ve had enough time. I think it’s maybe been a blessing for the writers, in some way, because they had the time to just sit down, think and create.”
Dyer’s sentiments certainly seem to track well, especially considering the writing team recently tweeted an image of all the completed scripts for Stranger Things season 4. In terms of plot details about season 4, not much information is known at this time. However, a teaser that was released earlier this year confirmed Hopper was still alive, located somewhere in Russia. Also, The Duffer Brothers teased that fans can expect more guest stars in season 4, following in the footsteps of the series’ previous seasons, which included the likes of Cary Elwes, Sean Astin, and Paul Reiser.
The coronavirus has had an immeasurable impact on the film and television industry, delaying a litany of projects and causing numerous delays. However, it’s comforting to hear that the shutdown has benefited the production of Stranger Things, allowing the writers time to fully develop their scripts and utilize the extra time they’ve been allotted. If anything, this development should only help production run even smoother when the gears are allowed to start turning once more. However, fans will certainly have to wait longer for season 4 than they originally anticipated due to the fact the series was only one month into production when the coronavirus hit. Fortunately, this update from Dyer certainly signals that Stranger Things season 4 might be worth waiting just a little bit longer for.
