Among the exciting revelations from the new Stranger Things season 4 photos, it seems the series is teasing its best team-up yet. Stranger Things season 3 had a wild finale, as Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) faced off against Russians and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends took on the Mind Flayer. Though the Russians and the monster are eventually defeated, it doesn’t happen without loss. Billy (Dacre Montgomery) dies after standing up to the Mind Flayer, which was once controlling him. Meanwhile, his sister, Max (Sadie Sink), watched it all in horror. Also, after Joyce closes a portal to the Upside Down, Hopper disappears, though Netflix later revealed that he somehow ended up in a Russian prison camp. Finally, the season ends with Eleven being powerless and leaving Hawkins along with the Byers family.

Stranger Things season 4 has experienced significant delays thus far. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming on the production had to be halted, and now a new teaser trailer indicates the show won’t arrive until 2022. However, the delay also had unexpected benefits. According to producer Shawn Levy, the Stranger Things delay made the season better. Because of the extended wait, the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, could write the entire season before they filmed it. The added time may have boosted the show’s quality, allowing it to be tweaked and changed ahead of actual production.

Showing the wait may be worth it, new set photos are teasing an exciting team-up. Stranger Things continues to build upon its strong pairings in the show. In season 2, the series put Steve (Joe Keery) with Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), creating a hilarious bromance that also carried on into season 3. The following season stepped up the pairing, adding Robin (Maya Hawke), an ice-cream-slinging and Russian-message-decoding breath of fresh air. Season 4 adds to Dustin and Steve’s group again, with Stranger Things set photos showing Max and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) joining the mix. The new trailer also teases the group, with Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) coming along as well.

The grouping brings a new dynamic to the Stranger Things crew. Max shakes things up in season 2 of the Netflix series, skateboarding into Hawkins with attitude and sass. Though she was hurting for her brother in season 3, Billy’s done nothing but hold Max back, often treating her terribly. Like Robin injected new energy into Dustin and Steve’s shenanigans in season 3, Max could do the same in season 4. Likewise, the group could help revitalize Nancy. In season 2, the character was out to get justice for Barb (Shannon Purser), and season 3 had her dealing with the burden of misogynistic co-workers. By teaming up with Dustin, Steve, Robin, Max, and Lucas in season 4, Nancy could finally have some fun.

Still, the photos and trailer may be intentional misdirection. Netflix is especially protective over Stranger Things spoilers, and the trailers have traditionally done an excellent job of masking the storylines. So though the images and the trailer appear to be teasing the new team-up, it’s not clear whether the grouping is just for brief scenes or part of an extensive season 4 storyline. However, with all the delays allowing the Duffer Brothers to hone in on the storylines that work in Stranger Things season 4, it’d be strange if it wasn’t the latter.
