To celebrate EVO this weekend, PC and PS4 owners will be able to play Street Fighter V for free between August 1 and August 11.
Over the past few decades, video game types, styles, and genres have come and gone. Right now, the battle royale genre is the order of the day. However, some genres refuse to go away. They don’t even need to be tweaked that much in order to stay relevant. The humble fighting genre might be the best example of that as it barely even needs to be changed to remain popular.
Pit two gamers against each other in an arena and people will probably love it. The graphics don’t even need to be that good. As long as we like the characters and the gameplay is good, chances are we’re going to play it. There is even an entire weekend dedicated to fighting games, EVO, and the 2019 installment of that iconic tournament will take place on August 2 through 4.
As always, Street Fighter will be one of EVO’s focal points. Street Fighter V, to be exact. If you aren’t lucky enough or good enough to be at EVO this weekend, you can watch the action unfold on Twitch. Plus, you’ll be able to play Street Fighter V alongside the pros for absolutely nothing. Capcom revealed on Twitter that the fifth chapter of its iconic franchise will be free-to-play on PS4 and PC starting August 1, 2019, until August 11, 2019.

If the idea of Street Fighter V for free doesn’t entice you, and you already had your fill of the game when it was released three years ago, maybe the additional content will win you over. Not only will the game’s launch characters be available for free, but the Season 3 additions will be as well. That means a grand total of 16 characters will be available for free. Only for 11 days, though, so don’t delay once August 1 hits.
If you want to watch the pros play Street Fighter V while giving the game a go yourself, the finals of the game’s showing at EVO will begin at 12:00 pm PST this Sunday, August 4, 2019. The weekend’s main event slot will be reserved for the EVO debut of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a franchise that has taken the humble fighter to the next level.
