Barbon is back in Streets of Rage 4, and he’s a tough mother to take down. Here’s how to do it.

Streets of Rage fans are loving Streets of Rage 4. It hits all the right notes of nostalgia while also offering a brand new beat-’em-up experience, filled with new characters and returning favorites. One of those returning characters is Barbon, the stage 1 boss from Streets of Rage 2. He’s apparently left his old job as a bartender in the city to start hanging out at a biker bar on the outskirts, and he doesn’t take kindly to anyone trashing haunt.

Fans will find a lot familiar between Streets of Rage 4 Barbon and his incarnation in Streets of Rage 2, but he’s got a few new tricks up his sleeve. Let’s go over some good strategies for taking Barbon out.

Watch Out For Those Legs

Barbon’s most dangerous attacks are his spin kicks. They have incredible reach, will knock you off your feet, and allow Barbon to reposition an enormous distance. Avoiding these kicks will be crucial to your success in this fight.

The only good news here is that Barbon will telegraph his spin kick attack by flashing white and hunching over slightly first. As with other bosses, the white flashes mean that Barbon’s attack can’t be interrupted except by a super (or “star attack”), so the best strategy when you see Barbon about to spin is to interrupt his attack with your own super attack.

For this reason, the absolute best thing to take into your fight against Barbon is as many stars as possible. The more stars, the more times you can interrupt his unstoppable attacks and the better your chances of survival.

After you get Barbon down to roughly half health, his unstoppable attack goes from two spin kicks to three, and Barbon’s reach becomes even greater. Supers here are the best option to interrupt those attacks and stay safe.

Your next best option is mobility. Characters like Blaze and Cherry will have the easiest time avoiding Barbon’s kicks, but Axle, Adam, and Floyd will have trouble. Sometimes, the best you can do is take a kick to the face, get up, and come back swinging. However, don’t get up too early if you get hit with Barbon’s first kick as he can clock you again with this third kick if you get up too fast.

A Few Other Things To Watch Out For

Barbon can’t really be grabbed, so don’t bother trying. He can also block attacks, but he doesn’t do it as much as in Streets of Rage 2, so don’t feel like it’s too much of an impediment to getting a combo off whenever the opportunity presents itself.

The bikes that surround Barbon’s arena can all be broken to reveal goodies like health items and money, but watch out! Whenever a bike is busted, a biker chick will exit the bar and start attacking. Destroy too many bikes at once and you’ll have a swarm of baddies to deal with along with Barbon himself.

Also, that bike in the middle that Barbon is leaning against at the beginning can be busted and wielded as a weapon. This can help provide some extra reach to low-reach characters like Cherry and Blaze, but don’t feel too bad if all you do is toss it to get some chip damage in against Barbon or to knock down a biker baddy.
