Based on an alien planet, Subnautica will have players trying to survive in an aquatic environment as they try to get off the planet they crashed on. Playing as the character known as Ryley Robinson, players will find themselves exploring several unusual biomes, eating fish, scanning material, and building bases as they try to progress through the game. The player is alone on the planet and this is only highlighted when the player begins discovering empty life pods scattered around the map.
With the ocean being so large and foreboding, it is only natural to want some form of companionship. A friend. A pet. While it was not initially apparent, players did eventually discover a way to gain a pet in Subnautica in the form of the cuddlefish. Cuddlefish are a cute-looking species that is noted to be capable of displaying highly social behavior. They are more than willing to follow or play with Ryley. So below is an outline explaining how to acquire them.
Where to Find Cuddlefish Eggs in Subnautica
The cuddlefish cannot be found fully grown. Instead, cuddlefish can only be obtained by finding an egg and hatching it in an alien containment unit. The eggs are exceptionally rare, with only 5 being able to be found in the base game. The eggs do not respawn either, so players will need to place the egg in a safe place if they do not want to immediately hatch it.
The eggs are all located in fairly deep portions of the game, with some of them even being hidden in confusing cave systems. As such, it is advised for players to bring along oxygen tanks, a rebreather, and a sea glide to ensure that they do not drown. Bring along vehicles like the cyclops or sea moth too, as they are sometimes required to reach some of the deeper depths of the game.
- Mushroom Forest Caves: There are two cave systems in the Mushroom Forest biome. The northwestern cave system and the northeastern cave system. Both have cuddlefish eggs in them. The catch is that the cave systems themselves can be confusing and easy to get lost in. So despite the fact they are located at a fairly low depth level, it is still entirely possible to get lost and drown in them. But search for long enough and players will find the eggs.
- Deep Grand Reef Degasi Base: Located fairly close to the Floating Island, this base will likely be surrounded by hostile crabsquids. It is also home to several notable items. This includes the alien containment unit that can be scanned, an orange alien tablet, and yes—a cuddlefish egg. The egg should be found on the floor of the base’s lab area.
- Lost River Laboratory: The entrance to this Precursor cache is found in the Lost River biome, just behind the ancient leviathan class skeleton. Requiring the orange tablet found in the Deep Grand Reef base, the cuddlefish egg should be plainly presented on one of the tables.
- Dunes Sinkhole: Located in arguably one of the more dangerous parts of the game, this egg location is located in the Dunes biome, which has several reaper leviathans prowling the area. These reaper leviathans will attack any player or vehicle that is in the area, so be sure to bring along a seaglide and a few first aid kits. Thankfully, finding the cuddlefish egg should be fairly easy. Just swim to the very bottom of a massive sinkhole and the cuddlefish egg should be right there.
There is admittedly one more way to get cuddlefish eggs in the game: time capsules. These capsules house items that were deposited by other Subnautica players and can often be found scattered throughout the player’s game. As the cuddlefish egg is allowed to be stored in a container, that means that some players can get really lucky and find a cuddlefish egg inside of a time capsule.
But this is all luck-based. There is no guarantee that the player will find any time capsules, much less one that contains a cuddlefish egg. But they do exist. It also serves as the only legitimate way to work around the game’s limited cuddlefish egg supply.
