The Suicide Squad director James Gunn defends David Ayer’s original film. Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad faced a host of issues from the start, with studio heads meddling in the early stages and forcing Ayer to make changes when Warner Bros. wanted to make a second cut based on the positive reception to the strong first trailer. The heavy editing made in post-production led to a confusing plot and little depth to the characters. Despite the negative response from fans and critics, the film still grossed $746 million at the global box office, and Ayer revealed that a director’s cut of the film is almost done and should be released, saying that his version is better.

A sequel centered around the DCEU anti-hero team was in the works before the first film’s release. Ayer was initially set to return as the director but dropped out to direct Gotham City Sirens. Due to the backlash from the first film, The Suicide Squad became more of a reboot than a sequel, and eventually, James Gunn was hired to direct. Only Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, and Joel Kinnaman are reprising their roles, with Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, and John Cena as new characters. Gunn was given the reigns on choosing any DC character he wanted to use. Although he’s reportedly taking a different approach with The Suicide Squad, the director is now responding to its predecessor’s critical backlash.

In an Empire interview, Gunn defends Ayer’s Suicide Squad, praising the director’s choice in actors. Gunn acknowledged that the final product was not what Ayer had in mind for the movie. Read his full comments below:

“Listen, David Ayer’s gotten trouble for the movie. I know it didn’t come out how David wanted it to come out. But he did one really, really great thing, and that is he picked fantastic actors to work with, and he dealt with these actors in building their characters in a really deep and fearless way. It’s something David definitely deserves to be lauded for, and it’s definitely added to this movie.”

Ayer has not been silent about Suicide Squad’s complicated history and how he now regrets the compromises he made during production. After the film’s release, Ayer admitted that he wished Jared Leto’s Joker had more of a prominent role, as the trailers leading up to it so heavily implied. Though Leto’s Joker received mixed reactions, Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn was one of the film’s breakout stars. It was no surprise that she was given a spinoff film and was one of the few cast members from Suicide Squad to return in the sequel.

It will undoubtedly be interesting to see what Gunn does with The Suicide Squad, whether fans will view it as a semi-sequel or a hard reboot. It’s obvious that DC is hoping to redeem itself with Gunn’s movie, but it’s nice to see Gunn supporting Ayer, who has been so widely criticized since his film’s release. Though Suicide Squad was not a critical success, it seems that Ayer did the best with what he could.
