The cast “leaks” a new The Suicide Squad movie trailer. Written and directed by Gunn, The Suicide Squad is a quasi-follow-up to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad film, featuring the return of some DC characters and the introduction of plenty more. Margot Robbie returns as Harley Quinn along with Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag. New to the cast are Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker and Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark. They aren’t the only new additions to The Suicide Squad movie cast, but as Gunn warned when he unveiled the full roster, viewers shouldn’t get too attached since the film lives up to its title and some characters won’t make it out alive.

In fact, based on previous trailers, it seems there are two Suicide Squad teams – and presumably one doesn’t survive their mission so the other team is sent in to finish it. The first full trailer also revealed the villain they’ll be fighting is Starro, an alien supervillain who first debuted in DC Comics back in the 60s. Still, much of the previous teasers and trailers have focused on the humor of the movie while keeping the story close to the vest. Now that a new The Suicide Squad movie trailer has been released, the story and mission are slightly more clear.

The Suicide Squad movie trailer, “leaked” by the cast, opens up by showing how Amanda Waller convinces Bloodsport to join her team – by leveraging his daughter’s court case against him, though what exactly her court date has to do with is unclear. For his part, Bloodsport is in prison for shooting Superman with a Kryptonite bullet, which pulls from the character’s comics history. The trailer then shifts to be about a mission Waller calls “more important than you could possibly imagine.” She later explains that their goal is to “destroy every trace” of something called Project Starfish, with scenes showcasing the underground containment of Starro.

Of COURSE #TheSuicideSquad cast leaked the trailer, they’re literally villains 😈

As the trailer indicates, it seems the main story of The Suicide Squad is Waller sending a team to wipe out Starro. Since the footage from all the trailers has featured two distinct teams – then one made up of characters from each – it appears one team is sent to destroy the villain but fails and Waller has to send in another. Waller’s dialogue about the team members being chosen for their abilities spliced over characters like Captain Boomerang, Savant (Michael Rooker), Weasel (Sean Gunn), Javelin (Flula Borg), Blackguard (Pete Davidson) and Mongal (Mayling Ng) may indicate they’re the first choices for the mission, with Peacemaker, Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) and Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) being sent in later. If that’s the case, it means Waller’s top team fails, which sets up an underdog story for those who are on the second team.

Other than the story and more teases of Starro’s involvement, the new Suicide Squad movie trailer focuses a great deal on highlighting Gunn’s vision for the DC film – particularly his humor. There are quite a few funny bits mixed in among the action- and story-focused footage, including the team debating what kind of dog Weasel is, Peacemaker asking about Project Starfish’s possible connection to buttholes and King Shark reporting to Rick Flag about seeing a bird. The scene about Weasel also explains what he did to get sent to prison – he killed 27 children. How all this footage fits together and how exactly the team’s mission to defeat Starro turns out will be revealed when The Suicide Squad releases in August.
