Warner Bros. officially launched their DC Comics Extended Universe with the premiere of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice last month. But, when critics didn’t respond well to Zack Snyder’s followup to Man of Steel, many wondered if the reviews would impact its box office performance or the studio’s DCEU slate. We can’t be sure of any far-reaching consequences as a result of the reception of Batman V Superman just yet, but the film saw a marked dropoff at the box office in its second week. More recently, Warner Bros. has bumped up the release date for the 2017 Wonder Woman solo film and reports suggest the reception of Batman V Superman could impact the possibility of a Superman solo movie.
The next film on the DCEU slate is David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, due out later this year, which has begun reshoots. Rumors circulating with the early reports of the reshoots claimed Warner Bros. wants the tone of Suicide Squad to more closely resemble that of the humorous second trailer for the film, which used Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and was heavily praised by viewers. Now, Suicide Squad star Jai Courtney has commented on the nature of the reshoots, while another source offers weight to the rumors.
In an interview with ET, Courtney was asked about the reports that the Suicide Squad reshoots were meant to slightly retool the tone of the film. The actor responded, “[You] can’t believe everything you read,” and further commented on the humor and what’s being added:
“I think there’s plenty of that in it, I wouldn’t say we’re going back to make it funnier. There’s some additional action stuff that we’ve been doing, which is pretty dope. Really, we’re just kind of adding in that sense.”
However, according to Brett Schulte, who tweeted that he was on the set of the Suicide Squad reshoots, Warner Bros. did request Ayer make the tone of the film lighter because it “was too dark.” Furthermore, Schulte tweeted that the reshoots will last “three weeks … but supposedly only two days on location the rest on stage.”

Certainly, both Courtney’s and Schulte’s comments should be taken with a grain of salt, since they each only offer a piece of the puzzle that is the Suicide Squad reshoots. While it may be the case that Schulte is correct in Warner Bros. asking Ayer to do the reshoots in order to add more levity to the flick, Courtney would have a better idea of what the reshoots actually involve – that is, if he is on set for all of them – and the action scenes may contain more of the humor seen in the second trailer. So, it’s possible that both comments have some truth to them.
That being said, Courtney’s statement that Suicide Squad contains plenty of what fans responded to in the trailer should offer some hope to those worried about Ayer’s original vision for the film. However, it remains to be seen what exactly these reshoots will entail as well as how they will affect the tone and reception of the final Suicide Squad film when it’s released in theaters.
