Niantic has officially announced the Community Day Pokémon for January 19, 2020. Surprise, it’s Piplup. The beloved fourth generation penguin Pokémon was all but expected by fans of Pokémon GO, but that doesn’t make its arrival any less exciting. Neither does the fact that it will bring with it a bonus to egg hatching speed. It might be too cold to walk in certain areas, but that also makes it the perfect time to hunt penguins (fake ones, of course).

The event details, as always, were shared by Niantic on its official channels. It announced Piplup as the featured Pokémon, but did not share what its special attack will be. The bonus buff this time around will be 1/4th egg hatch distance. Community Day will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Northern Hemisphere, and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Southern Hemisphere.

Fans have known for a while that Piplup will be the January Community Day Pokémon due to the game’s pattern. The starter Pokémon have always had Community Days every other month. Since Turtwig was the September star, and Chimchar led the festivities in November, Piplup being January’s even critter only made sense.

What’s less guaranteed is what comes after Piplup. If you asked earlier last year, Pokémon GO would have expected Gible to get the spotlight. Community Day tends to favor popular Pokémon from each generation, particularly starters and notable Dragon-types. By that logic, Gible was a shoe-in. However, shiny Gible was stealthily debuted in early December. Community Day always acts as the debut of a Pokémon’s shiny form, so Gible having its shiny released early seems to eliminate its Community Day chances.

Also up in the air is Riolu. Its evolution, Lucario, is one of the most popular Pokémon of all time. Again, previous moves by Niantic would suggest it as a Community Day pick. But on further thought, it’s one of the rarest Pokémon in the game and only hatches from eggs. It makes a great case for spending real money to buy Incubators to hatch more eggs. Would Niantic give up its cash cow (ug… dog?) for a free event?

It could be that Piplup is the last fourth generation Community Day. Pokémon GO players will find out in February. Until then, get ready to do some walking on January 19, regardless of the weather. Those adorable blue penguins need a home.
