Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been extremely lucky lately as its newfound popularity, due in part to its rerelease on Netflix in the US, has caused a resurgence of new Avatar stuff, from sweet merch to fantastic new stories. Blessed by the fact the show carries on as comic books, fans have gotten a fresh dose of the Avatar world with the recent publication of a solo comic book for Katara and another focused on Toph just around the corner. Now, it seems that another member of the Aang gang is getting her own adventure. That’s right, it has just been announced that Suki is getting her own comic book; Avatar: The Last Airbender – Suki, Alone is coming soon!
Suki is by far one of the most popular characters in the series, but she’s always been more of an ensemble character, complimenting Sokka’s growth as his much more mature girlfriend. Finally, this Kyoshi Warrior is being thrust into the spotlight in Avatar: The Last Airbender–Suki, Alone. Published by Dark Horse Comics, the book is written by Faith Erin Hicks, the same author that handled the recent Avatar: The Last Airbender – Katara and the Pirate’s Silver! as well as wrote the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender – Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy, so she is already very well versed in the ATLA universe, especially when it comes to the female characters. Back alongside Hicks is an illustrator by Peter Wartman, with colors by Adele Matera, both of whom worked with her on the other two Avatar books.
The cover features Suki training while the spirit of Kyoshi glows behind her. Being a Kyoshi Warrior, the connection between Suki and the past Earthbender Avatar is obvious, but the cover leaves fans to wonder how exactly the comic will highlight this relationship, and if any new details about the fan-favorite past Avatar Kyoshi will be discovered. Kyoshi is so popular that she even has her own ongoing novelization, one that has given many further insights into the world of bending, so it wouldn’t be too surprising if she was an integral part of Suki’s story. Even if Kyoshi isn’t heavily featured, the ATLA comics have a long track record of adding amazing details to the universe’s overall lore, such as showing the origins of Zuko’s Blue Spirit Mask or what Iroh would do as Fire Lord, so this book is sure to delight fans with fun new info.
As of right now, not much is known about the plot as not too many details aside from its existence and creative team has yet to be revealed, but luckily at least a release date has been provided. Avatar: The Last Airbender – Suki, Alone is slated to release on June 22nd, 2021. Although this seems like a long wait, the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender – Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy is dropping in February 2021, meaning fans will have an awesome Toph story to keep them occupied while waiting. Soon fans will have a trilogy of comics focused on the adventures of the series’ female protagonists, something quite spectacular for an animated series that ended over fifteen years ago.
