Stopping to think about it, not a whole lot makes sense about Super Mario and his magical Mushroom Kingdom. Yet, due to the easy suspension of disbelief, players have enjoyed the adventurous exploits of the two Italian plumbers from New York who set out to save Princess Peach from the evil clutches of Bowser and his Koopalings for generations.

However, certain things do not add up when it comes to Super Mario and the vast collection of characters therein. For instance, the character of Rosalina has many dubious inconsistencies and contradictions that have had fans scratching their heads for ages.

10 Why Does She Wear A Crown?

Super Mario 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rosalina

Despite being one of the best Mario spinoff characters, Rosalina’s role as a princess is questionable at best and nonsensical at worst. Said to be a human being and a celestial goddess, nobody actually knows what Rosalina is a princess of or if she’s one at all. She does wear a bejeweled crown that she was born with on Earth, but that still doesn’t explain her royal lineage.

While Rosalina was sent to protect the star children called Lumas, acting as their protective godmother, this still does not inform anyone of her official status as a princess. Therefore, if Rosalina isn’t a princess, why does she wear a princess crown just like Peach and Daisy?

9 Relation To Peach

Another thing that makes no sense about Rosalina is the theory that she is the daughter of Peach. This theory derives from Rosalina’s 9-part Storybook in Super Mario Galaxy, where chapter 4 “The Dream” reveals an image of Rosalina’s mother. Only the lower half of her mother’s face is shown, but the hair, skin tone, and dangling earrings resemble that of Peach.

However, considering how Peach and Rosalina are the exact same age (info revealed in the game), this is physically impossible. Moreover, Peach is known for having zero children, which flies in the face of the outlandish theory.

8 Theory That Luigi Is Her Father

In the final chapter of the French version of Super Mario Galaxy, Rosalina’s unknown father is described as a tall mustached man. This had led several to falsely believe that Luigi is the father of Rosalina. Remember, it’s Luigi and Daisy that are coupled, not Luigi and Peach. So unless Luigi cheated with his brother’s girlfriend, this theory holds no water.

Moreover, some also believe that Rosalina’s boyfriend is Waluigi, but Nintendo has refuted the claim as Rosalina bears the distinction of being the only princess in Super Mario to not have a boyfriend. Rosalina should appear in the new Mario movie in order to further refute the theory.

7 Has Multiple International Names

While it is not uncommon for characters to undergo name changes for international releases of the game, efforts are usually made to retain the gist of the name’s meaning. However, Rosalina is known by seven different names internationally, some of which drastically veer from the original meaning of the moniker.

While Rosalina translates as Little Rose in Spanish, her name is oddly referred to as Estela (tail of a comet or star) in most Spanish-speaking regions. She’s known as Rosetta in Japan, (which can also mean “magnificent”), and Rosalinda in Italy. Stranger yet, in France the character is called Harmonie (Harmony), which is quite a stretch from Little Rose.

6 Goes Down In Weightclass In Mario Kart 7 & 8

Another curious aspect about Rosalina is how she got so tall. Her towering height, which nearly rivals Waluigi, is one of the main reasons why Rosalina was given a heavyweight class distinction in Mario Kart Wii. Yet, in her return in Mario Kart 7 and 8, Rosalina inexplicably goes down a notch despite appearing identically.

While it’s certainly understandable that the newly added Baby Rosalina would be in the featherweight division, Rosalina sharing a cruiserweight class with the vaporous King Boo and the gauntly thin Link is not. Especially after sharing the scales with Bowser and Kong in the previous game.

5 Makes Random Appearance In Cartoon Network Show

In one of the most random and head-scratching crossover appearances one can think of, Rosalina’s likeness showed up on a single episode of Cartoon Network’s The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack in 2009. With no real narrative tie-in to the Super Mario mythos, the character was summoned as a mermaid sea princess who is turned into a ghoulish zombie.

Only the creators know why Rosalina’s visage was chosen, replete with a turquoise dress and star emblem on her forehead, but eagle-eyed Nintendo fans are sure to get a kick out of the brief cameo.

4 Righthanded Vs. Lefthanded

Another major discrepancy about the ever-likable Mario character Rosalina that doesn’t seem to add up is whether or not she’s ambidextrous. For some odd reason, Rosalina is almost always depicted as being righthanded in Nintendo artwork, especially when wielding her magic wand. However, in most of the games that she appears in, Rosalina is shown to be a lefty.

In Mario Golf: World Tour, players can opt to play with Rosalina as right or left-handed, but beyond that, nearly every depiction of her on the page contradicts what is shown on the moving screen.

3 Hasn’t Aged In Millennia

Super Mario 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rosalina

On a very basic, literal, and superficial level, how can Rosalina live and breathe in outer space if she was a human born on Earth? Moreover, if she is said to be thousands of years old who is sent to visit Earth every 100 years as stated in her Storybook, how can Rosalina defy the mortal aging process?

Of course, the easy all-encompassing answer is that Rosalina’s magical powers, presumably given to her by her unidentified parents, are what allow her to retain her youthful appearance and spry physicality over hundreds of years. But for a human being to achieve this without a single wrinkle? That’s hard to accept.

2 Baby Rosalina Has Blonde Hair

Super Mario 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rosalina

Since Baby Rosalina (one of the best characters to play as in Mario Kart 8) is an infantile representation of the character rather than her offspring, it’s easy to overlook the blonde hair adult Rosalina is known for. However, going back to Rosalina’s storybook origin, her hair as a baby was red, not yellow.

While this hardly makes or breaks the characters in terms of continuity and consistency, it does make one wonder if the designers of Mario Kart 8 even recalled Rosalina’s redheaded upbringing or simply forgot to amend the hairstyle accordingly.

1 Commands The Comet Observatory With One Eye?

Not to sound dismissively logical, but how can Rosalina command the entire Comet Observatory with the use of a single eye? While her magical powers account for much of her strengths and abilities, it still seems odd that the one person left in charge of monitoring dangerous celestial activity is, in effect, a cyclops.

What’s really strange about this is how Rosalina’s was originally drawn with two eyes, with a later draft adding her trademark hairstyle combed over her right eye. Perhaps her backstory was conceived around the time of the initial sketch, as it really makes little sense to have such a powerful guardian whose job it is to watch incoming danger have such limited eyesight.
