Nintendo has unveiled its lineup for gamescom 2018, the annual gaming event held in Cologne, Germany. Visitors to Nintendo’s booth will be able to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dragon Ball FighterZ, FIFA 19, Dark Souls Remastered, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, and Killer Queen Black. Most notable is that Super Mario Party will be available to play for the first time.

Although Super Mario Party was featured on Nintendo Treehouse during E3, this will be the first time visitors can play the game hands-on. What will the demo feature for attendees? Nintendo says that “visitors to Nintendo’s booth in Hall 9 can try out five of the new minigames themselves as a taster of the fun that awaits.” So, while not the actual Party Mode, it looks like attendees will be able to get a feel of how Mario Party minigames on the Switch will play. This is important because Super Mario Party will be the first main Mario Party game in three years, and the first one on the Switch.

Super Mario Party was announced during Nintendo’s E3 presentation. In a return to form, the controversial car mechanic seen in Mario Party 9 and Mario Party 10 has been replaced with the traditional individual character dice blocks. Interestingly, a mode called “Toad’s Rec Room” will actually utilize two Switch consoles, which is seen in the E3 trailer. All in all, fans seem to be anticipating this title with enthusiasm. After recent Mario Party games received mediocre scores (Mario Party 10, Mario Party: Star Rush, and Mario Party: The Top 100 all received scores of under 70 on Metacritic), it looks like Nintendo has listened to fan complaints and should deliver a definitive party experience with Super Mario Party. The real question, is whether or not this will be the game to finally surpass the highest-rated installment of the series on Metacritic, the original Mario Party, with a score of 79.
