After the last release, Super Monkey Ball Bounce, many wondered when the next installment in the franchise would arrive. Now, after nearly five years, Sega has unveiled the next title in the storied franchise: Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD.

Monkey Ball began its journey inside of an arcade in 2001 before moving onto the Gamecube. When Super Monkey Ball was released for the system, it quickly became a commercial success for Sega, securing a spot as one of the publishers’ best sellers inside the United States through 2002. What followed was a consistent release of titles that varied in their level of success, though Sega continued to turn a profit from the franchise, and it maintained a strong following.

Like many publishers, Sega saw an opportunity in the mobile market and decided to release Super Monkey Ball Bounce for both Android and iOS in 2014, but the game received mixed reviews and wasn’t as successful as the company had hoped. Now, after a long wait, fans of the franchise will finally get another console title with the release of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD later this year.

Given how popular Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz was for the Wii, a remake of the game seems like a fitting choice for the publisher. While Sega couldn’t capture the mobile market in the way that it had hopped, there’s a good chance that the success of its latest title could help drum up support for future titles on mobile.

NintendoEverything first reported on the news by sharing a gameplay trailer for the game that can be found on Sega’s official YouTube channel. The trailer showcases intricate levels and dynamic movement, along with a completely interactive environment. Additionally, it reveals that you will be able to jump, tilt, and roll your way through one hundred unique levels while battling various bosses on your way to victory. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD will be available on the Xbox One, Switch, and PS 4 starting on October 29th.

While it has taken Sega some time to release another title, the fact that they have put so many levels into this game is certainly a good sign. Given the difficulty that the franchise had with boss battles in the past, it will be interesting to see what changes have been made to that aspect of the game.

Monkey Ball was able to secure a spot as one of the best party/platform games ever created, and it’s good to see Sega not give up on such an iconic series. Only time will tell how this latest installment is received, but based on the trailer it seems clear that the publisher is ready to rectify the mistakes that it made in the past.
