Nintendo has confirmed that its theme park in Japan will be getting a Donkey Kong expansion and that it will open in 2024.
Thanks to a number of delays brought about by the pandemic, the grand opening of Japan’s Super Nintendo World was delayed quite a bit. The theme park is open now though and has been for a number of months. Those lucky enough to have visited the park in Osaka will have had the chance to experience its rides and tasted some of its food and drinks, including Koopa Troopa-themed calzones.
There’s a lot more to come from Super Nintendo World in the future, though. Nintendo has finally confirmed that it is indeed working on a Donkey Kong expansion. The DK area, which will hopefully open in 2024, will make the park 70% bigger. It will also include a DK-themed rollercoaster which appears to take up a bulk of the room in the diagram below showing how the park will look once it’s done.
Super Nintendo World’s Donkey Kong expansion might be one of Nintendo’s worst-kept secrets. Concept art released before the park even opened included a DK area, and a locked door discovered once the park welcomed its first visitors was a clear easter egg that the ape would be getting his very own theme park in the future.
Park-goers also noticed that Super Nintendo World’s companion app often refers to the area that is already open as Super Mario Land, hinting that the park as a whole will be made up of a number of different areas once it’s finished. Donkey Kong will be the first to get an expansion, but other Nintendo IPs could join in on the fun in the years to come. Kirby, Zelda, maybe even Pokemon down the line.
Osaka is probably quite the round trip for many of you reading this, especially in a world still trying to shake off a pandemic. Fear not, as the west will eventually be getting its very own version of Super Nintendo World. Universal Studios in Hollywood has already started selling the same Nintendo merch you’ll find in the Osaka park in preparation for its own Mario-themed expansion.
