The Super Smash Bros. series of games have been incredibly popular and revered worldwide since the very first edition of Super Smash Bros. was released in 1999. Since then, the likes of Melee, Brawl, Smash Bros. 4 and most recently Ultimate have been introduced, with each addition to the franchise adding new ways to play the game and perhaps more importantly, more characters to control.

As Pokémon is one of many franchises that both pre-dates Smash in terms of origin and are still going to this day, there have been several Pokémon characters that have been introduced to Super Smash Bros. over the years. Now with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there are 8 playable Pokémon characters for players to have fun with, away from the turn-based combat of the traditional Pokémon games.

8 Incineroar Has Explosive Offense But Suffers From Poor Speed And Severely Lacking Recovery Efficiency

Incineroar was introduced to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, completing their largest Pokémon roster to date, with 8 in total. Incineroar, the wrestling cat Pokémon, showcases all three in Smash Bros. with its brutal offense. It relies on grabs to deal large amounts of damage and can even boost future attacks with certain moves.

Despite being able to unload severe damage onto opponents, Incineroar is too slow to be especially playable and its poor recovery in the face of defeat makes it one of the most frustrating characters to use at times.

7 Jigglypuff’s Light & Floating Offense Can Be Both Effective And Detrimental Depending On Execution

Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 not only introduced Pikachu as a part of its starting roster, but it also had another Pokémon as an unlockable character in Jigglypuff. Jigglypuff stayed on the roster all the way through to the present day on Ultimate and is a character that often divides opinion.

Jigglypuff is a very floaty character that thrives in the air, with it having generally quicker movement up there. It can frustrate opponents by using combos to drag them away from solid ground, disrupting any previous form of momentum. However, Jigglypuff is one of the lightest characters on the roster, making it rather easy to KO, and the fact that it doesn’t have the best range means that it has to be risky and engage opponents at close range.

6 Lucario’s Aura-Based Offense Can Be Especially Effective But Can Be Easy To Counter

Lucario was introduced to the roster in Super Smash Bros. Brawl alongside Pokémon Trainer at the expense of both Pichu and Mewtwo. Lucario’s unique Aura-based offense translated over to Smash Bros. from the traditional games and anime, being integrated amongst some generic brawler combat.

Lucario becomes increasingly dangerous the more it gets hit, meaning that any form of lead is essentially meaningless as long as it is still on the battlefield. Aura Sphere can pack a punch similar to Mewtwo’s Shadow Ball but can deal damage while charging up. Unfortunately, Lucario’s poor speed and evasiveness means that it can be caught in combos and easily defeated, despite its potential threat.

5 Mewtwo Packs A Serious Punch Whether It’s Up Close Or From A Distance

Mewtwo and Pichu were both introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee, before being removed for Brawl, and Mewtwo returning in Super Smash Bros. 4. Mewtwo uses impressive range and strong attacks to launch relentless powerful barrages on opponents. Its tail-based offense packs quite the punch and if given time to charge up a Shadow Ball, can cause even more damage to its foes with this ranged knockout move.

Not only is Mewtwo quicker than would be expected, but it is also, unfortunately, a lot lighter. And alongside its inability to quickly escape combos, essentially means that one wrong move can result in Mewtwo getting juggled and knocked out.

4 Greninja’s Control Is Brilliantly Quick & Fluid Even If It Is At The Cost Of Defensive Capabilities

Greninja was added to the roster for the 2014 edition of the series, Super Smash Bros. 4. Greninja is fast, slippery and its fluid movements make it one of the most enjoyable to play as. It can deal quick damage with dash attacks and can rack up various different devastating combos to leave opponents helpless.

Greninja can attack from range or leap forward quickly to engage in close quarters combat, making it generally very adaptable. However, it has poor defense when put on the back foot, meaning that if its evasive maneuvers aren’t good enough, then it won’t take too many hits to eliminate it.

3 Pichu May Be Light But It Can Still String Together Some Quick Combos

Pichu was initially thought to be a much weaker and nerfed version of Pikachu, introduced due to how strong and popular Pikachu had become. However, Pichu was quickly shown to be another powerful Pokémon in its own right after its release in Melee.

Pichu’s speed and combos can rival Pikachu’s but its self-harming electric attacks and poor range can sometimes let it down in certain matchups. Pichu is also lighter than Jigglypuff, making it easy to eliminate without having to inflict too much damage. Pichu was dropped for Super Smash Bros. Brawl but was reintroduced for Ultimate.

2 Switching Between Squirtle, Ivysaur & Charizard Allows The Pokémon Trainer To Adapt To Most Situations

Pokémon Trainer was introduced to the Smash Bros. universe in Super Smash Bros. Brawl alongside Lucario. The Pokémon Trainer can call upon Pokémon from the starter-lines in Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard and switch between them mid-battle, but in Super Smash Bros. 4, this was restricted to just Charizard, before reverting back to the default for Ultimate.

Squirtle is small, fast, and can rack up some good combinations depending on the opponent, while Ivysaur has more bulk to it, making it pretty formidable when taking its ranged and explosive offense into consideration. Charizard should be switched to when looking to finish off opponents, as it can deal heavy damage while being surprisingly quick considering its size and weight. Charizard can struggle to escape combos, which means that the player needs to strategically navigate between the three Pokémon when the correct occasions and opportunities arise.

1 Pikachu’s Speed, Adaptability & Devastating Combos Make It One Of The Best Playable Characters In The Entire Franchise

Pikachu was the original Pokémon character to be included in a Super Smash Bros. roster and is universally considered to be one of the best characters of all time, and the best Pokémon character by far. Despite being rather small in stature, this does not make Pikachu weak by any means, with its speed, heavy strikes, and quick combos making it one of the deadliest playable characters.

With its Thunder Jolt projectile attack giving it a range advantage against players that prefer to stand off and defend, Pikachu can switch between range and aerial combat seamlessly, racking up unstoppable combos before landing the finishing blow.
