Superman & Lois: 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Don’t)

When Supergirl finally introduced Kara’s cousin Clark Kent in season two, we knew it was only a matter of time before the Man of Steel fully joined the Arrowverse. Now that Crisis on Infinite Earths has united the entire Arrowverse on Earth-Prime, Superman & Lois is set to premiere as part of The CW’s 2020-2021 season.

Though some of his rogues have already been featured on Supergirl and The Flash, Supes still has a long list of interesting enemies and allies who could show up in Metropolis. These are five supporting characters we want to see in Superman & Lois and five we don’t.

10 DON’T WANT: DOOMSDAY

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

Doomsday is definitely Superman’s most formidable enemy. He’s even ended him before. It’s not that we don’t think Doomsday should ever show up, but the series needs to wait a few seasons until it establishes itself. We also think Doomsday would work best during a crossover.

We’ve seen the creature previously appear in Smallville and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with each project having a hard time bringing it to life. We expect a series on The CW to have budget constraints that would make it difficult to create a comics accurate version of the intimidating alien.

9 WANT: LUCY LANE

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

Lois’ sister Lucy made her Arrowverse debut in season one of Supergirl. As a major in the US Army, she works as a lawyer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. She was also James’ ex, which made her a foil for the burgeoning romance between Kara and James.

Despite Jenna Dewan’s confident, self assured portrayal of such an accomplished woman, she was relegated to third wheel in a love triangle. We’d like to see her get a second chance in a real storyline with her sister. The Lane sisters working together to unravel a conspiracy would be fascinating.

8 DON’T WANT: BIZARRO

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

Various Superman properties have different origins for Bizarro. In season one of Supergirl, Maxwell Lord tries to create a Girl of Steel he can control, but the clone’s body isn’t stable, and she is put into a coma until a cure is found. It became one of the many plotlines left behind in the first season.

In its five seasons, Supergirl has explored many classic Superman stories, which means there are some characters the show will have to avoid, so things don’t get repetitive. Since Bizarro was told over the course of multiple episodes, we just don’t need to go down that road again.

7 WANT: BOOSTER GOLD

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

As one of DC’s most interesting heroes, Booster Gold is someone fans have been wanting to see in live action for years. The closest we’ve gotten is a season 10 episode of Smallville. Over the years, we’ve heard rumors about movies and TV series, but they’ve never made it past the talking stage.

Introducing the time traveling hero on Superman & Lois would give fans a chance to get to know him, without the character carrying a whole show. He could also provide comic relief in the same style as The Flash’s Ralph Dibny/The Elongated Man.

6 DON’T WANT: SAM LANE

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

Lois’ father General Sam Lane has never really approved of her relationship with Superman. Every version we’ve seen has had a problem with his daughter’s fascination with someone he refuses to trust. We understand being an overprotective father, but he’s unbearably stuck in his ways.

In the Arrowverse, Sam was seen in season one of Supergirl taking over the DEO, investigating J’onn and once again causing problems for the alien citizens of National City. Honestly, he’s just not a character we need to spend more time with.

5 WANT: LOBO

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

The main man steals the show every time he pops up on screen. We’d love to see him show up on a recurring basis to wreak havoc on his frenemy Superman’s life. We’ve heard his name mentioned before on Supergirl, and we know there have been major changes since Crisis, so it’s the perfect time to bring him into the universe.

Our top preference is to see Emmett J. Scanlan reprise his top notch portrayal from Krypton. We’ve seen this work before with Matt Ryan’s John Constantine. As an interstellar bounty hunter, Lobo is a character that could appear across the whole Arrowverse.

4 DON’T WANT: METALLO

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

Metallo falls in the unfortunate category of characters that have been used up by Supergirl. During Superman’s debut in the season two premiere, we saw him fight a version of the villain. John Corben was an assassin who was transformed into Metallo by Cadmus after being shot by Lena Luthor. He was eventually defeated by Kara and Alex.

As one of Superman’s most prominent foes, Metallo has also been featured on Lois & Clark and Smallville. Seeing as how the character has already made his appearance in the Arrowverse, we just don’t need to revisit the story.

3 WANT: JOHN HENRY IRONS

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

John Henry Irons was inspired to become a hero by Superman, with the two developing a strong friendship. Steel is one of Clark’s closest allies in Metropolis, often assisting him with certain rogues.

Though he’s Superman, even the Man of Steel needs friends to talk to about his hero work. Someone who understands his sacrifices and choices. Steel would be a great character to provide that for Kal-El. He could also lead to the introduction of his niece Natasha Irons.

2 DON’T WANT: GENERAL ZOD

Superman & Lois 5 Supporting Characters We Need in The CW Series (& 5 We Dont)

It may seem odd that we don’t want to see Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman battle General Zod, but frankly, we’re exhausted at seeing these two fight. From Superman II to Smallville to Man of Steel to Krypton, we’ve seen this rivalry so many times.

At this point it seems impossible to tell a Superman story without Zod, but just this once, let’s try. At the end of season two, Queen Rhea uses silver kryptonite to trick Superman into fighting Supergirl, making him think it’s Zod. It was a quick appearance and we want to keep it that way.

1 WANT: MAXWELL LORD

When Supergirl moved from CBS to The CW, and its production joined the rest of the Arrowverse in Vancouver we lost some great characters. One of the people we’re still hoping to see again is Maxwell Lord. Peter Facinelli played him with just the right balance of menace and charm.

When we last saw him, Max was testing Kryptonian powers on himself, hinting at the development of his telepathic abilities. With Lex Luthor taking center stage on seasons four and five, perhaps Max could become Superman & Lois’ big bad.
