Superman & Lois episode 4’s big reveal could be a hint that Jordan’s power source isn’t what everyone thinks. In the pilot episode, it was confirmed that Jordan (Alex Garfin) possesses super powers. Prior to this discovery, Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) were concerned that something like this could happen to one or both of their two sons. Since they’re the children of a Kryptonian and a human, it was difficult to predict if either of them would have Clark’s powers – nor to what extent.

Thanks to a talk with Jor-El (Angus Macfayden) at the Fortress of Solitude, the Kent family found out that Jordan’s powers won’t develop to the same degree that Clark’s did. Apparently, he’s only capable of a fraction of what Clark can do, and that won’t change in any significant way as he gets older. That was, of course, disappointing to Jordan, who has had to come to terms with the fact that he’ll never be as powerful as the Man of Steel. A new revelation in Superman & Lois episode 4, “Haywire”, raises new questions about the true nature of Jordan’s abilities.

Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner) uncovered a large amount of X-Kryptonite in the Shuster Mines under Smallville. In the comics, X-Kryptonite can give humans the powers of Kryptonians on a short-term basis. The X-Kryptonite is likely connected to Jordan and Jonathan’s story in the episode, which revolved around a kid named Tag (Wern Lee) developing a mentahuman ability he couldn’t control. It could be that the “substance” that activated his powers is really residue from a piece of X-Kryptonite. That would explain why his power appears to be a weaker variation of super speed. Tag getting some form of a major Kryptonian ability gives the implication that X-Kryptonite shares the same properties as the alien mineral from DC Comics. What this means is that the door is now open for Superman & Lois to reveal that Jordan actually didn’t inherit his dad’s gifts.

While Jordan sharing some of Superman’s abilities through genetics certainly makes sense, so does the X-Kryptonite explanation. After all, the comic book version of it does impart Kryptonian abilities upon others. Also, this would explain why Jordan didn’t have them until after they came to Smallville, which is where the X-Kryptonite is located. It could be that his exposure happened without him noticing on the day they came to town, and it would explain why he doesn’t have full Kryptonian powers.

It’s worth wondering what difference it would make in the long run if this turns out to be the case. As previously pointed out, the effects of X-Kryptonite were only temporary in the comics, and if the same applies to the Arrowverse’s interpretation of it, Jordan’s newfound success on the high school football team may end much quicker than he expects on Superman & Lois. Jordan’s powers disappearing would be unfortunate for the character, but if Clark were to investigate, he could at least find out about X-Kryptonite and hopefully stop Morgan Edge before his plan goes too far.
