In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, both Darkseid (Ray Porter) and Superman (Henry Cavill) are displayed as extremely mighty beings — but who is the strongest? Although neither spends much time on the big screen, when they do appear, their abilities are front and center in some of the movie’s most action-packed scenes. It’s evident that both beings possess world-shaking power, but one of them might be more powerful than the other.

Superman enjoys more screen time than Darkseid in Snyder’s Justice League, so naturally, some DCEU fans understand his powers better. While viewers did get to witness Darkseid’s fighting prowess during flashbacks and alternate reality sequences, those few minutes were nowhere near as explanatory as watching Superman easily defeat the other five Justice League heroes after they resurrected him. In that Metropolis scene, Zack Snyder makes it very clear that Superman’s individual power rivals that of all the others combined. He’s as fast as the Flash, stronger than Aquaman, more indestructible than Cyborg, and easily withstands Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth. He’d probably also have killed Batman, if it weren’t for Lois Lane’s intervention.

That might seem like an indication that no one in the DCEU can prevail over Superman, but that’s not quite the case. Kryptonite is still the bane of his existence. Superman’s Achilles’ heel proves to be his undoing in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and even though the third Mother Box brings him back to life in Justice League, DCEU fans must realize that Superman is still mortal, and thus, still incredibly vulnerable to Kryptonite. That’s where the scales tip in Darkseid’s favor. He’s lived for millennia, conquered 100,000 worlds, possesses legions of supernatural minions, and has no definitive weakness. Although Superman is strong indeed, Darkseid is even more powerful, which is why he was poised to be the arch-villain in “Snyderverse.”

The evidence that Darkseid is more powerful than Superman may not be abundant in Snyder’s Justice League, but that’s because Steppenwolf is the primary antagonist. There is still enough proof to make the claim that Darkseid would defeat Superman if the two met in battle. Consider Steppenwolf for a moment: he’s a supernatural being thousands of years old, whom the Justice League isn’t capable of destroying until Superman lends his strength, and yet he kneels in fear and begs forgiveness from Darkseid. For a being as dangerous as Steppenwolf to live in service of Darkseid says a great deal about just how omnipotent the sole ruler of Apokolips is. Furthermore, when Cyborg sees a vision of the future from a timeline where Darkseid acquires the Anti-Life Equation, Superman kneels to Darkseid, just like Steppenwolf before him. The simple fact that Darkseid’s sole motivation is discovering a mathematical formula that promises total enslavement of the universe should tip off viewers to the extent of his power.

Darkseid is a seemingly immortal deity, the champion of the New Gods, wielder of the Mother Boxes, and the conqueror of a hundred thousand worlds. Although Ares wounds Darkseid during his first invasion of Earth, Darkseid easily kills the Green Lantern Yalan Gur before being forced to retreat. Audiences of Zack Snyder’s Justice League must assume that since that early set-back, Darkseid went on to hone his world-conquering abilities. He’s certainly earned a remarkable following if super-powerful beings like Steppenwolf and Desaad are merely his underlings. Superman is powerful on Earth. Darkseid is a galactic threat. If Snyder’s vision for the DCEU is ever realized in full, it would probably take a cohort of superheroes, not just Superman alone, to defeat the almighty Darkseid.
