One of Superman’s greatest weaknesses is magic, but in the future, one of his evil descendants has mastered it. In Action Comics 2021 Annual, on sale now in print and digital, Pyrrhos, an evil member of the House of El, crashes a wedding and reveals that magic is part of his plan to restore the House of El to glory.
Comic fans know that Kryptonite, specifically the green variety, can kill Superman, but magic is his other major weakness, as established in 1964’s Superman #171. No reasons have been given as to why, but spells and magical weapons can harm the Man of Steel. If Superman were able to conquer magic, it would make him virtually unstoppable, and Pyrrhos, a descendant of Superman’s first introduced in Future State, has vowed to do just this—all in the name of restoring the honor of the House of El. Action Comics 2021 Annual is written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, with art by Siya Oum and Scott Godlewski, colors by Hi-Fi, and letters by Dave Sharpe.
It is a glorious time for the House of El, as Alura and Khan are to be joined in marriage. Khan must undergo a trial before the wedding can take place. All is well until Pyrrhos crashes the affair, taunting Khan for his low station. Khan prepares to charge Pyrrhos, but he banishes Khan, Alura, and others to the Phantom Zone. Enraged, Superwoman (the former Supergirl) attacks Pyrrhos, but he quickly subdues her. He then tells her that he will use science, his own strength… and magic to restore glory to the House of El.
Pyrrhos is dispatched by Khan, Alura, and the rest after they return from the Phantom Zone, so readers never see Pyrrhos use any magic. Yet the idea of a Kryptonian using magic is an odd one. It is one of their key weaknesses, and maybe even more deadly than Kryptonite, given how much more common magic is in the DC Universe. It would seem to make sense for them to not even dabble in it, but Pyrrhos is going to rush headfirst into the realm of magic. On top of his Kryptonian physiology, Pyrrhos also has technology from many worlds at his disposal, and when all of this is combined with magic, he could be a formidable foe indeed. Alternately, this could be a fool’s errand for him and lead to his downfall if it turns out he shares the other Kryptonians’ aversion to magic.
Magic is one of Superman’s greatest and only weaknesses, capable of hurting him just as bad as Kryptonite. This leads to the Man of Steel giving magic a wide berth, but one of his descendants is going to master it—for all the wrong reasons.
