Warning: contains spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5!

DC’s new Superman has just began a relationship with his new boyfriend, who has figured out the answer to a question plaguing readers for decades: what does one get for the man who has everything? In Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, the Man of Steel faces a terrifying threat – his own power – and needs allies fast. Fortunately, he finds one in the form of Jay Nakamura, who gifts Jonathan Kent potentially the greatest gift one can bestow upon a nascent Superman.

In Superman: Son of Kal-El, Clark Kent has left Earth and has passed on the mantle of Superman to his son Jonathan. Jonathan quickly swoops into action, saving civilians from a climate change-induced wildfire, citizens from a collapsing building, and refugees from a capsizing boat. These immigrants are from the island nation of Gamorra, and the ruler President Bendix decides to attack Superman to force him out of his affairs. He supercharges Superman via a weapon of his own design, causing Superman’s cell to become overloaded.

Bursting with energy, Jon rescues people from a flood in Luxembourg, saves hostages in Zambesi, and transfers dozens of patients from one hospital to another in Metropolis via carrying a newly-opened bridge. He’s exhausted and tired after his endeavors, and he still feels overwhelmed by the world. After Superman’s new powers scare him into leaving the city before he gets someone hurt, he stops in Jay Nakamura’s apartment and falls asleep…for nine hours. When he wakes up, he notices that Jay placed noise-cancelling headphones over his hears. He figured it would be easier for him to stay sleeping “…if I drowned the world out.”

Superman is surprised; he hasn’t seen someone attend to his needs quite like Jay. But judging by his reaction and considering his powers, he’s most likely never had a true good night’s sleep in some time. Superman’s senses are always active, and similar to Daredevil, they can get overwhelmed if he loses focus (or is hit with an energy-producing weapon). This is the answer to the question posed in Watchmen writer Alan Moore’s classic issue For The Man Who Has Everything, in which Superman is placed into a dreamlike trance and imagines himself back on Krypton, living a normal life.

In Alan Moore’s story, Superman is married and lives on his long-destroyed homeworld. But the answer to the question wasn’t Krypton, or even a family – the answer was that Superman desires peace more than anything else. Peace for himself and for others, and Jay and Jon’s new relationship can certainly help with the former; in this respect, Superman finally has a gift he desires most.
